Car question

Whenever we have been to Ireland, we have always had no more than four in a car.  Appears we will have five next March, and was wondering if anyone had ever rented a car there that would realistically hold five people?  I don't want to rent a van, and realize that the larger the car the more issues on those small roads ... smile however we pack real light and wouldn't need huge trunk space.

I see some cars on the Dooley site claiming to seat five, but wondered if that is really the case.

Anyone ever rented something that would hold five comfortably?  If not, we certainly can go the two-car small route.

Thanks.

Geno

List of car fleets available in Ireland showing guides.  Personally I would think a regular mid size like the Skoda Octavia (Diesel) would be a good option.

Geno,

We have had forum members rent a station wagon before to fit five people who were not exactly small sized. Have you looked at that? You will want one of the larger luxury cars or even a van. I rented a VW Touareg in Germany with friends once and I think something like that would fit 5 people fine.

Tony,

Thanks for the link.

I agree. When we have had two cars before, we tried to travel together, but often became separated for awhile going through a village.  Not a big deal, but much simpler if we can be in one car.  Certainly the cost would be more doable as well!

Hope you find what you require. For just 5 it makes sense to have one vehicle. It would be different if it were 6 or 7.

We just got back from Ireland and had a VW Jetta diesel. I had signed on for a smaller car but we ended up with an upgrade. While there were only 2 of us, it was a 4-door and the back seat looked roomy enough for three people, assuming they are of average size. The trunk was huge. We fit loads of stuff in there - three suitcases (carry-on size but not sure the dimensions), a garment bag, a backpack, several shopping bags full of sweaters and random other things. If everyone was traveling light with one average size suitcase, five would easily fit in the Jetta trunk.

I reserved ours through EasyTour Ireland/Hertz. Not only was it very reasonably priced but the entire rental process was smooth and without issue. I just looked on their website and the Jetta isn't listed, but I presume it would compare to the VW Golf though the Jetta is more sedan-like than the Golf which looks more sporty to me.

How much driving will you be doing?

The Jetta is a Golf with a boot (trunk) I have known them used as a taxi and did own a pre 2000 example, great for 4 or 5 on a short trip, but.... The VW Passat / Skoda Octavia is the next up and better suited to 5 adults. common as fleas on a dog with families around here.

Thanks for giving kudos to Easy Tour Ireland! The Husband used them for his golf trip recently and "said very little" about the experience. However, what he did NOT say (i.e., complaints, gripes, rumblings, moans (Tony's term) etc.) was enough for me to hear! I am using them for my spring trip and it's good to get a little "meat on the bones" from the experience of others! Looking forward to your Trip Report!

It is good to know about your experiences with Easy Tour Ireland. I also checked out Easy Tour but the quote was $377 higher than Dooley. However, it included CDW and Super CDW. I didn't see a way to decline that online. Perhaps the price would be more comparable if I could.
