Retired couple would like to stay in Ireland for one to three months, probably July/August/September. We have three visits under our belts over the past 3 years, the last visit being 3 weeks. We drove and stayed in BB's for all but one week, when we rented a house in Dingle.
We are ready to explore deeper into a few areas that we like. Possible scenario: 2 weeks in Sligo area, 2 weeks in Clifden area, a month in the Burren, 2 weeks in Kenmare. We like being near water, nature, plants and birds, trad music, archeological/mythological sites, not interested in cities.
Would like suggestions about economical longer-term car and housing rental.
You are talking about Peak season so Accomodation prices will be high!! Daft.ie is the rental site that might help with the one month accommodation and I would suggest that you opt for a location with some public transport?
have you considered House Sitting/Pet Sitting? We have a couple of neighbours that do that, they are away at the moment but will try and remember to ask next time I see them. Their house is up here on the Slieve Aughty above Lough Derg and whilst not on your list would meet your interests as listed.
It might be cheaper to buy an old car to knock about with for 3 months than rent one?
Cars usually rent for a max of 28 days. If you stay longer you will have to return your can and do another rental. I've looked into buying an old car myself since I go to Ireland so often and have a place to park it between visits. But the insurance, licensing fees, upkeep, etc. would probably be just as much as renting.
Start your planning now because - as Tony said - you want to rent during peak season. Have you looked at my Self-catering page? Have you thought of Northern Ireland as well as the Republic? I'm just back from self-catering in Kenmare myself and loved my stay at Doire Farm Cottages. If you stay in one place for more than a week, I would inquire about a little discount.
Thanks both of you! Some new ideas I hadn't thought of. Also, didn't know about the 28 day limit on cars. Michele, I use your B&B listings but forgot about the self-catering page. Will check it out.
