Ring of Kerry

Hi Michelle,

I've just come across your web site and it's packed with great info for me to plan my next trip to Ireland.  I'm one of the lucky ones who has a mother living in Dingle so I visit quite often, this year my husband and I are taking his father and wife so our holiday will need to be a little differnt. Our first night will be in Cobh (thinking of the bellavista what do you think) then on to the Ring; we want to stay a nigt or maybe 2 in either, Waterville, ballinskelligs,  portmagee or Valentia - we intend visit the skelig experience the next day any suggestions as to location and hotel or B&B would be welcome, our budget is about E35 per person pr night.  The area wants to have a bit of life and preferably intersting pubs with music.

Many thanks  & happy new year

Anne

Anne,

I'm delighted you stumbled across my website and hope you are getting a few tips for your trip. You must be a seasoned traveler to Ireland with your mother living in Dingle. That is one of my favorite places in Ireland.

If you haven't been to Cobh before, it is a small charming town. I recommend seeing the Queenstown Story museum and St. Colman's Cathedral when you are there. The town is quite walkable but hilly with steep streets. I am not familiar with Bella Vista but have inspected the WatersEdge Hotel and found it to be very nice. There is a link on my "Lodgings" page. I think you might have to bump up your budget a bit for accommodations in hotels or guesthouses.

As for the Ring of Kerry, Waterville or Cahirciveen will probably be best for towns with pubs. As for how much night life is on, it will depend on time of year. There is always a lot more going on in the season than off-season. I recommend Harbour Hill just outside Cahirciveen: http://www.dirl.com/kerry/cahirciveen/harbour-hill.htm

That should get you started.

Michele

Hi Michelle,

many thnks for your prompt reply.

I have only been to Cobh once and really loved it, the heritage centre is so interesting it really gets you thinking on how hard a life that was had in those times.  On our last visit we didn't have time to to explore the town so we're really looking forward to our visit.

Thanks for the tip on accommodation on the Ring, do you know if the accommodation is in walking distance to a bar or restaurant?

I can't wait to get back to Dingle, I would love to live there if only I could convince my townie husband!  Stilll at least I can visit.

Kind Regards

Anne

Anne,

There is a very good pub/restaurant (The Point) about one mile from Harbour View. However, since the B&B is up on a hill, it would be a very steep walk back.

Hi Michele,

me again I'm afraid; thanks for the tip on the restaurant in Cobh, I'm sure the walk back will do us all good.

Now for my next problem, our next stop will be around Bantry, any recomendations?

I looked at Vikerys hotel and although the public rooms look fine the bedrooms look a little tired have you heard of a B&B called "Dromcloc" it's a farm b&b about 2km from Bantry.  I can't find any reviews on the accommodation but it looks really nice.

I've found somwhere in Waterville for the third night that looks good Klondyke; once we've visited these places I'd be happy to let you know our views if it is of interst.

Kind Regards

Anne

Anne,

You asked me if the B&B near Cahirciveen was within walking distance of a pub/restaurant. The Point is near Harbour View B&B outside Cahirciveen on the Ring of Kerry, not Cobh.

For Cobh there is a restaurant right in the WatersEdge Hotel.

In Bantry I don't have any personal recommendations. However, I can recommend some nice places to stay nearby in Goleen (Mizen Peninsula), Skibbereen and Kenmare. Let me know if you are interested. Take a look at the info page about my book: http://www.irelandyes.com/book.html  It might be just what you need. And be sure to look at my lodging page too.

We will definitely look forward to your reviews when you return.

Michele
