Early morning flight from Dublin

We are looking forward to three nights in Dublin at the end of our Ireland road trip this September, but are undecided on whether we should stay downtown or near the airport.

We would love to stay downtown within walking distance of Trinity College, but then what do we do with the rental car? If we return the car to the airport first, what is the best way to get from the car rental facility to the downtown hotel with our luggage? Does Dublin have airport shuttle vans like we do in the States? Or would we need to plan on using public transit? We are a 60s-ish couple in reasonably good shape, but probably not up for hauling luggage for long distances.

I realize we could take taxis back and forth, but I've heard the taxis can be quite expensive.

Also, our flight home takes off from Dublin Airport at 6:30 a.m. What time do you think we should plan to arrive at the airport?

If we stay downtown, would you recommend that we move to a hotel near the airport on our last night?

Or would it be simpler to just stay near the airport the entire time, and drive or ride buses into town each day for sightseeing?

This is all so confusing, and we'd appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks so much.

Tabitha,

Welcome to my forum. Where are you flying to from Dublin? That will determine when you have to be at the airport. You can also check with your airline to see when their ticket counter opens.

I would opt to stay in the city center for the whole time. Just get rid of the car before doing Dublin. There is public transport to and from the airport by bus. http://www.dublinairport.com/gns/to-from-the-airport/by-bus-or-coach.aspx However, for a little more you can take a taxi. Maybe 25 - 30 euro. It is worth paying for the convenience.

Hope that gets you started.

That's very helpful, Michele. Thanks so much.
We will be flying from Dublin to Paris, where we will then board a plane to the USA.

If you are not planning the Dublin night life then maybe consider Malahide or Howth north of Dublin and very handy for the airport have a local small town feel but on the Lucas into the City for the Daytime. The Airport Hotels around Swords are fine for a last night but lack the local social activity.

You should check with your airline. But I would be there 2 hours in advance. If it were a flight to the US or Canada you would need a minimum of 3 hours.
