I have a 19yo Son who has been asking to go to Ireland for years. I book the air and ask son and 13yo D what they want to see and get shrugs. Except they both said no museums and touristy things. haha. We are flying into Shannon. I am thinking of traveling from Shannon to Galway 1st day. Staying in Galway 3 nights, maybe do a day trip to the Aran Islands. We are intersted in staying in or close to the city. I am thinking of maybe traveling to Dingle (passing by the Cliffs on the way, isn't there a Harry Potter connection?). I have heard that Dingle is a great location for music, but not sure there will be enough to entertain the kids. Ideas anyone? I am not worried about seeing anything in particular figuring my husband and I will be back sometime and I can see the important sights then. I am open to anything the kids might like. Very vague I know but now I am starting to panic because I have done no planning. We will have a car but I also don't want to spend a lot of time driving. A few long drives are OK though.
Welcome to the forum. Do your sons have any interests at all? Sports, fishing, hiking, surfing, horseback riding, etc? Would they like to swim with a dolphin? Falconry at a castle or cave? Dine in a real medieval castle with music, songs and serving "wenches" dressed in costume?
If your older son has been asking to go to Ireland for years, ask him why. He must have some ideas.
Hi. 19yo Son really has no idea why he wants to see Ireland just that he does. He has asked to go to Ireland for years and I figure this might be our last vacation with him. He loves his Irish heritage I guess. Right now I am planning of flying into Shannon June 4th. We arrrive in the early morning. Drive to Doolin. Spend one night, Wed take a ferry to one of the Aran Islands. Travel to Ballyvaughan. See the caves, falconry and a castle (can't remember the name. Thursday drive to Galway though Kinvara. Friday we do a tour of area Connemara, etc and see Trad on the Prom. Sat is a free day and I let the kids walk around and see what they like, experience Galway. Sunday another free day, we will plan something. Monday we travel to Adare where we will stay till we leave on Wed. Perhaps a day trip to Bunratty.
The Aran Islands will take a whole day. Aillwee Cave, falconry and Dunguaire Castle (in Kinvara) you can see on the way to Galway but will take up a good portion of the day. Your sons might enjoy a catamaran ride on Ireland's only fjord Killary Harbor in Connemara. You might want to visit the Aran Islands from Galway as opposed to Doolin, where the ferries can be canceled because of weather and seas.
Bunratty is one of Ireland's better restored castles and your boys can roam throughout it at will even going up to the ramparts.
