I'm leaving for a dream vacation in Ireland with my girlfriends 2 months from today!!! So excited!
We are doing a bus tour for most of our trip, but have added a couple of days at the end to be on our own. We will be based in Galway for 3 days, 2 nights before heading back to Dublin to fly home.
On our tour, we will be hitting Dublin highlights, Waterford, Blarney, Killarney, RIng of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher, and Bunratty Castle.
We're trying to decide what would be reasonable (driving and time-wise) to see on those days we have on our own, and what we shouldn't miss in Galway. Anything good in County Limerick? That's where my ancestors called home!
Also, we are hoping to add a day to our trip so we can stop somewhere between Galway and Dublin for a night.. my friend wants to visit Meath, also because of family connections. Any suggestions there?
And while I'm asking, what's on the must-see list in Dublin? We are arriving early early and have no commitments until evening. We want to do something to keep us from giving in to jet lag and going straight to bed. OUr tour will include St Stephen's Green, Phoenix Park, St Patrick's Cathedral, Trinity College.
Thanks so much! This forum is a wealth of information and a great resource!
There is not a tremendous amount to see in Galway City itself. You could take a walking tour from the tourist office or the hopper bus. I suggest a day trip to Connemara and another one to the Aran Islands.
For Co. Meath Newgrange and Knowth at Bru na Boinne.
There is a lot to do in Dublin: http://www.visitdublin.com/ I would definitely see Kilmainham Gaol if you are interested in history.
Use this route planner: http://www.aaireland.ie/routes/ Get mileage (not kilometers) and divide by 35 to get driving time estimates. Each sightseeing stop will add time to the drive.
You could take a month along the length of the N59, I only got as far as the approach to Killary Harbour (one day i will get further in my writings) but to drive the road to Leenanne and back to Galway via Cong is about 4 hours plus any Stops and or detours..I always use google maps the AA isn't interactive enough for me to drag and drop side routes, and lets face it the AA use Google maps so cut out the middle man..Michel is right though, dont expect to average over 40mph some of the roads out on the Connemara might look straight and deserted but many are built over blanket bog and are not exactly flat and smooth.
