Visa's for Northern Ireland? and Rental car South to North?

Making plans for a first time trip August 2014.  (Long story) I have several questions already.  I have apx 15 days and will fly into Dublin.  I plan to spend 5-6 days there and through the South and then head to a small town in Northern Ireland from where I will "home base" and do day trips throughout the North.  Not every day mind you, some days of just watching the river and resting smile  But my questions are, so far, do I need a visa to travel back and forth out of NI to RPI?  (USA citizen) And can a rental car from the South pass back and forth without difficulty?

I have been reading your website here and want to thank you in advance for the help.  You have already been a God-send.

Sherry,

Welcome to my forum. I'm glad you've found it helpful so far. No visa is necessary. Going from RPI to NI is like crossing state lines in the US. No borders or anything. You will know you have crossed into NI when the signs show miles and mph rather than kilometers and kph.

You will have to tell your rental agency that you will be visiting the north as there could be issues in worse case scenario the car has to be repatriated or gets stolen up there. Some rental companies still charge for this so be careful and scrutinise quotes, just tell them you might go into the north rather than that you are spending a lump of time up there.

The past couple of years, I discovered that the speedometers on cars rented in the ROI only display speeds in KPH, whereas all signage and limits in NI are concerned with MPH.  Gone, are the 'Good Old Days' of dual-display speedometers ...

cry   cry   cry

Since NI is quite fond of Speed Cameras, it would be a GOOD idea to bring along a 'Cheat Sheet' that converts MPH to KPH:

This is just a ROUGH guide, of course.  Most common limits are as follows: 30 MPH actually equals 48KPH ... 50 MPH = 80 KPH ... 60 MPH = 96.5 KPH ... 70 MPH = 112.5 KPH

112 kph70 mph
96.5 kph60 mph
80 kph50 mph
64 kph40 mph
 48 kph 30 mph
 32 kph 20 mph

Hope this helps ... smile

With Km it pays to work on the 2/3rd rule to keep shy of the traps as above 30mph in built up areas is the most common so 45kph and 60kph for 40mph. also gives you an idea of distances down here when you are used to working in old money so 30Km is 20 miles away 45km is 30 miles away etc.
