Trip to Carrickmacross

First trip to Ireland to trace where my grandparents lived.  Grandmother was born in Carrickmacross and Grandfather in Lahinch.  My husband & I want to fly in to Dublin and pick up a rental to drive north to Carrickmacross.  We have been conversing with CIE Tours through AAA but finding that maybe we are better off arranging on line.  I am using your book Michele (just received it week before last) and find it amazing!!! Thank you so much for the information as it has been wonderful.  CIE requires full payment before allowing access to their B & B website and no guarantees of reservations for dates required because of the vouchers.  This of course makes us uneasy & after reading your book, we are thinking of making all of those reservations directly with the B & B owners you have recommended.  The only challenge I am finding is that there is no B & Bs in Carrickmacross.  Does anyone have recommendations?

Our draft itinerary is scoped for 11 days>Day 1 Dublin to Carrickmacross; Day 2 Carrickmacross (Church of St Patrick/Cemetary), Day 3 Drive to Galway; Day 4 Explore areas west of Galway; Day 5 Drive to Lahinch or Ennis; Day 6 & 7 Explore surrounding areas west; Day 8 Drive to Kenmare; Day 9 Explore; Day 10 Drive up to outside of Dublin? Day 11 Leave Dublin.

Thank you in advance for anyone's input!

That looks perfect Bob, as we wanted to include a Castle in our travels!

Thank you so much, as I have been yearning for this trip a life time.  My father visited in Oct 1983 at a young age of 74!  He traveled alone & used public transportation & the guidance of Irish hospitatlity.

We are planning to be there in early June!

If you are looking to stay in Carrickmacross proper, you might look to The Lodge. Just on the outskirts is Arradale House. Brookville Manor might also be worth a look.  Lisanek House is also a pleasant 5 minute or so walk from town. Those are the B&Bs that I would recommend.

It looks like you are in genealogy mode, have you registered on the Ireland Reaching Out site yet? It is a reverse genealogy programme that was implemented in 2011. We are still rolling out parishes and counties but Monaghan has a good base, as does Galway.
