My wife and I (71 and 66 years old) are in the final planning for our May/June two week trip - our fifth trip to Ireland. We will be driving into Dingle, and I want to enter via R560 through Conor Pass. My wife read a guide book that called this road "treacherous".
Does the road have sheer drop-offs without guard rails? Is it narrow? Can some one that has driven this road advise me as to what to expect?
Thanking everyone in advance. This web site has been a godsend.
We have driven Connor Pass a few times and have not found it to be treacherous, but judge for yourself by going on youtube.com and type in Connor Pass. You will find at least 10 videos of the Connor Pass drive.
The road is very narrow. Since you will be driving north to south into Dingle town, you will be on the inside lane not the cliff edge. Sometimes if two cars meet one must back up to a wider spot so you can pass each other. However, the road has been improved in recent years. It is not as bad as it once was. If you take is slow you should be fine.
There you go 300 yards of narrow section with a load of passing places. nothing to worry about and no Heavyweight traffic allowed so you are not going to meet up with a tour bus coming the other way. The rest of the Connor is just normal Irish driving.
