Allihies as a destination

Here is info on Allihies: http://www.bearatourism.com/bwallihies.html Yes, about an hour + from Kenmare.

I remember an old photo book about Ireland by Jill Uris. She called Allihies the crossroads to nowhere. It looked pretty grim back when.

I found a B&B there but have not inspected it: http://www.allihiesseaview.com/

Next trip to Ireland will be mainly in the SW, with multiple night stays in Killarney, Kenmare, and perhaps Skibbereen area.  Nothing for sure yet, but I haven't been to Mizen and Beara areas in years and want to go back there.

One thing I was thinking about, however, was taking one night and driving out to Allihies.  The drive would no doubt be nice, and the village looks tranquil and interesting.  Has anyone been there, and would it be a decent one night stay, or better done as a day trip from Kenmare?

Thanks!

Geno

Geno,

I usually do Beara (and Allihies) as a day trip from Kenmare. But I think an overnight on the peninsula would be fun. Allihies is tiny and you might find more to do in Castletownbere. However, if you are up for a quiet, different experience and can find accommodation it might suit you.

Have a look at Henry's in West Cork. It is splendid: http://henrys.ie/www.henrys.ie/Welcome.html

Thanks -- Allihies just looks  nice.  A quiet evening in a small village sounds good to me whenever I am in Ireland. Probably it is an hour's drive from Kenmare?

I have not been on that side of the peninsula, although I have been to Castletownbere for lunch and a beverage at McCarthy's Bar. That looks like a nice fishing village.

Appreciate the link to the place to stay!

Geno
