First trip to Ireland

I discovered this website and forums recently and I am so glad that I did! I've been reading alot, but am getting a bit overwhelmed!  I am trying to plan my first trip to Ireland which will be in July of this year. I am planning this with 3 friends and we will only be in Ireland for 4 nights as we have to meet up with our college continuing education class in London for 10 days. We just wanted to come to Ireland since we were already going to be so close even if for only a few days.  I know that we cannot go all over the place in that amount of time.

From what I've read about and searched about so far this is what I'm thinking, please let me know if it is completely unreasonable or doable.

We will be landing in Shannon, renting a car there. None of us have ever been out of the U.S and so none have driven on the "other" side.  Should we be worried about this?

We then were hoping to make it to a town near the Cliffs of Moher (even if we don't make it to the cliffs until the next morning) Spend the night, see the cliffs in the morning.  Then head South and take the ferry at Killimer and wondered if it is reasonable to think we could make it to Dingle that afternoon.

Spend the night in Dingle and the next day on the Dingle peninsula, hoping to make it to Killarney that afternoon or early evening.  Spend the night in Killarney.  Spend the next day around this area.

Then we only have one more night and have to make it back to Shannon to fly to London.  We really would like to see Blarney castle and the Rock of Cashel is that possible?  What would you all suggest?  Thanks so much!

Sarah,

Welcome to my forum. I'm glad you have been taking your time looking around and reading other postings. I suggest you take a look at my "Car Rental & Driving" page for tips. If you rent an automatic car it will make driving easier. Also get the smallest car that will fit all of you (and your luggage) comfortably. Doolin might make a good first night in Ireland.

I'm afriad that doing Blarney Castle and Rock of Cashel is too much for your short time unless you cut out something else. Otherwise, what you have outlined looks fine. What time is your flight to London?

Thanks for such a quick response!  I was afraid that Rock of Cashel would be out.  I'm not sure where to spend that last night.  I'm also not sure of flight time to London yet. I have purchased your book but not yet received it, I can't wait!  Can you suggest B and B's in the towns of Doolin, Dingle and Killarney? Or is that info in your book?  Thanks!

Sarah,

Once you know your flight time you will be able to determine where to spend your last night. If you need to be nearby Shannon Airport for an early flight, then Bunratty is a good area. If your flight is later in the day you may be able to spend another night in Killarney. The B&Bs you need will be in my book when it arrives along with all contact info. You can also take a look at my "Lodgings" page. Just click on "IrelandYes Index" and "Lodgings".
