When my wife Mary and I  left Kilkenny (BTW, good place to hit the ATM for more euro), we took R693 to hook into N8.  I found this great to go to Cashel as you come around the bend, BAM, their is the Rock in the distance.  I had to pull over and stop to take a picture.  Allow some time for the Rock.  Then onto Cahir and its castle (We did not stop their, left it for our next visit).  Then continue with N8, N73 thru Mallow N72 into Killarney.  Include some extra time for a wrong turn, I made a wrong turn but can't remember where.  The road signage is a little shy.   Dingle is also  left for our next visit.  Killarney area is full of stuff.  A quick visit to Agadoe Heights just out side of town is quite a neat place to view the surrounding area. A hotel is across the street from the viewing area.   The others will chime in about ROK, although remember to photo op at Waterville  (Great ocean spot for viewing) and Lady's View.  Sooo,traveling time to Killarney is I guess around 3-4 hours.  Take your time  Don't know how long to Dingle.

I think the Agadoe hotel was to much $$$, plus we wanted to stay in town to eat at the Flesk restaurant (I think it is named after a local river), and also drink a little and stumble back to the B&B without having to drive.

We winged it and found a B&B in Killarney.  I looked for the hanging clover sign because I know it assures the B&B to be reasonably clean.  The name was Knock(something), can’t remember on New st. (maybe).

This reply post doesn’t sound to worthy does it.

The town also has an inexpensive gift store (stuff like keychains, postcards).

I’m sure the kids will dig the Ross Castle tour $$.  Can learn a few things of the past (i.e.  Why do the steps of the tower have different heights.  It was to slow down the robbers as the owners tried to escape and hurried up to the 4th floor). 

So after Agadoe heights you can drop in on the Gap of Dunloe.  After we parked the car in the lot, we only walked in for about a hour.  Others rent the horse buggies for a more intensive and lengthy visit. 

I think I'm beginning to ramble on here so I’ll stop for others to respond.

Thank you Michele and Gary. I think overnighting it in or around Killarney is the way to go. I'm thinking the drive time from Kilkenny to Dingle is just too long w/ 2 school age kids in tow. Plus, we do want to see Killarney National Park. etc.

So how does this sound -

Arrive - Dubliin 2-3 nights depending on what time we arrive
Killkenny - 2 nights
Killarney - 2 - ( Would you suggest staying at the actual town or in another area close by?)
Dingle - 2 nights
Bunratty - 1 night - last night leave out of Shannon

We are not planning on the ROK and husband really likes the idea of starting out "busy" and winding down. So our Dublin arrival and Shannon departure are set.

Now then, we do have some flexibilty on the nights. Trying to keep it about 10, but no more than 12.

Sorry, I don't know the various routes. Will going to Killarney via Cashel take me through Cork county?I'd like to see Cork County.
