Yikes please help me avoid the Green Blur this summer!!

Okay first and foremost I love this site!! And what a bunch of gurus!! I have learned so much already from you and tony2phones, the Italian chauffeur and others and it is all much appreciated!

This first time mother daughter Ireland adventurers are in need of some helpful advice to avoid the green blur. We are looking forward to a quality trip as opposed to a whirl wind tour and I hope I planned that for us but I'm interested to see what you think and if this seems reasonable or not so much and if not what would you recommend?

Also looking for B&B recommendations in Kilkenny and Doolin and any local guide services in any of towns- all I see is big bus tours  and we are really not interested in that...looking for local intimate flavor-

also looking for any suggestions in germs of clothes for this trip looks like it could be cold this time of year

Finally also wondering about the Super CDW is thus a scam or a good investment?? Arebthere, bother good policy options for coverage coing from the states? Has anyone looked at policy riders?

the itinerary:

Day 1 to Day 4 Dublin- arrive August 29th and stay in Dublin thru Sunday Sept 1st

Trinity College book of Kells, Irish house party? vs pub crawl? Walking tours? Maybe hop on hop off bus?

Day 4- Glendalough and Kilkenny- sleep 1 night in Kilkenny

stop at Glendalaugh,  Wicklow  mountains than back on the road to Kilkenny -any suggestions for lunch? Do we need a guide for Glendalaugh?

Day 5 Kilkenny to Dinglewake up Sept 2nd drive to Dingle- sleep 2 nights in Dingle

Day 6 The Dingle Peninsula- Sept 3rd day trip

Day 7 and 8 To County Claredrive down on Sept 4th and sleep 2 nights in Doolin

ferry across the River Shannon north to County Clare enjoy some free-time to visit the craft shops, take hike, or simply relax.

Is the ferry the best way to do this?? If not, what alternative route is recommended I don't want to be all day in the car thought the ferry would be shorter but also scenic...

Day 9 GalwaySept 5th day trip

Enjoy a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast around Black-head and Galway Bay. . Return to Doolin to sleep. Any local guide recommendations or things to do for the day? Is this town a skip or a must do?

Day 10- Sept 6th -The Cliffs of Moher and return to Dublin- looking for alternative ideas for bad weather what I am heraing is a lot of folks seeing nothing but fog and no cliffs that would be a serious bumdrivers a wasted drive- what's the best source to check the weather in this area for fog?

Day 11 Dublin- last night Sept 7th departing September 8th boo!!!

what are your thoughts?? many thanks in advance!!smile

Day One to Four...I would put a daytour of Glendalogh into here

Day 4 consider aiming to Kilkenny with a couple of options, The National Stud and Japanese Gardens and or The Rock of Dunamase.

Day 5 long empty drive, Possibly fit in the Rock of Cashel and Cahir for the castle and or Swiss cottage.

Day 6 Dingle

Day 7 Why Doolin? why 2 nights? If you plan on seeing south west Clare then the ferry is an option, the Shannon Tunnel is a quicker cheaper option taking you past Bunratty on the N18. see the Cliffs

Day 8 maybe Inis Oirr cliffs of Moher combi cruise, maybe Galway for the night?

Day 9 depends on night 8 but maybe a bit of the Conemara and possibly the craft village in Spiddal?

Day 10 aim for Dublin with a stop at Clonmacnoise?

Super cover insurance takes away the "Hold" requirement on your credit card and offers piece of mind. 3rd party insurance is a cheaper option will require the "Hold" on card funds and will require you to chase any claims to recover cash taken from the "Hold".

Local Tours like Glendalough (Day) and possibly Dingle (4 hours) Inis Oirr and Cliffs cruise (6 hours)

We are arriving Thursday August 29 in Dublin so I was planning to stay there thru the weekend leaving on Sunday morning to head to Kilkenny with a stop in Glendalaugh on the way to Kilkeny..are you saying I should consider a Glendalaugh side trip Friday or Saturday instead of a stop over on the way to Kilkenny on Sunday??

Doolin and why 2 nights- good question I don't know?? if we can drive from Dingle to the cliffs and not be exhausted maybe one night in Doolin would work out then and I can do Galway on day 8

For day 9 if we do Conemara and Spiddal what town would we sleep in for the night?

Do you think this is too aggressive?? If we wanted to spend 2 nights somewhere on the back end before going home where would you recommend Gallway or Conemara or neither?

We dont depart from Dublin for home in Washington DC until September 8th so I think you just helped us gain a day!!

Still thrown about the car insurance should I seek out private 3rd party coverage on my own as a cheaper option to the super CDW??

Many thanks!!!!

Here is how I would route it...a bit different from your plan...

Day 1-4 Dublin

Day 1 - Arrive in Dublin and make your way to your lodgings.. my go to in Dublin is either Eliza Lodge or Stauntons on the Green.. leave off your luggage and grab the Hop-on/Off Bus.. Your tickets are good for a full 24-hours...

Ride the full route and take note of the things you want to see first... Then make your stops based on how you rank them...

Day 2... take a walk...exploring Dublin on foot is one of the best ways to explore...and you will still have your Ho-HO tickets to use, as well...If you want to do a Pub crawl...I suggest this one

Day 3 ... I would recommend a tour of Newgrange over Glendalough

Day 4 - 7 Galway... take in Clonmacnoise on your way to Galway... I would recommend Lynfield Guesthouse or Adare Guesthouse

Day 5 catch a Ferry out to Inis Mor and grab a pony & trap...if he isn't booked, John will take excellent care of ya... and tour the island... on your return, you can explore the pubs

Day 6... Day trip through the Connemara..explore Roundstone, Clifden, Cong, Kylemore Abbey and return through Oughterard

Day 7 ... Dingle... you can break it up with a stop at the Cliffs of Moher and by taking the Tarbert ferry I would stay at Emalagh Lodge... an unforgettable experience

Day 8-10 Kilkenny... stop in at Cahir & Cashel enroute...I highly recommend both Kenmur House & Butler Court

Day 9 - Here is where I would bring in Glendalough... a day trip from Kilkenny to Glendalough

Day 10 - spend the morning exploring Kilkenny and then head towards Dublin Airport and a nearby hotel for your last night... no rushing...take in some of the sites along the way...

As to rental cars... look in to Journey through Ireland ... I have yet to be displeased with their service and neither have my clients... they give you two prices...a base rate and an all inclusive...They quote you in USD and you pay ahead of time...no muss ...no fuss at the airport when you pick up your rental...They use Hertz

Hang in there and keep at your itinerary. It takes time as well as trial and error to come up with a good one. Let us know if you have any other questions.
