Where is your son resident... If he leaves the UK for Ireland then progress from here then I am unsure how long he would be allowed to be in Ireland before continuing his journey or how long into a 36 week period he would have to be in Ireland before being considered a resident?
Assuming he lives with your partner ex or other in the UK then they could get 12months cover for your son if he is resident there more than 36wks per year. Likewise if he is resident here more than 36weeks you should insure him..
It is with 52 weeks in a year and 36 weeks being the term for residential status impossible to be both Irish and UK resident.

Two rules for Ireland, Take your time & bring a sense of humour
I am having real difficulty in finding an Irish Travel insurance company who can provide cover for my 13 year old son, who is a UK resident for a holiday to France starting this weekend. I am a UK national who has been resident in Ireland for 7 years, all the major providers stipulate that all travellers must be Irish residents. I have tried getting cover under a UK company, but they say the holiday must start and end from the UK for cover to apply.
I was wondering if anybody knows of an Irish(or UK) company that covers UK and Irish residents at the same time.
