First few days

We have decided to fly into Shannon, drive to Ashland Castle spend day and night. Enjoy the morning then head to Co Mayo.   Boys want to play a round at Carne. We have read the course is out a ways...So what is best, driving to Carne playing and then staying  one night close? Or is there somewhere to stay that is closer to places to visit and within a days trip to Carne? My daughter and I don't want to be waiting in the hotel all day...thanks in advance for the advise!!

Wow, Carne (Belmullet) that's way up there and about a 2 &1/2 hour drive from Ashford Castle (Cong).

On your drive up you will probably be passing through Castlebar which might be a drop off point for the ladies. There is the National Museum of Country Life near by, however without a car I don't know how you would get there. Another option would be, drop off the golfers and drive over to Ballycastle to the Ceide Fields, about 30 miles. You can check it out at, www.museumsofmayo.com .

After the day of golf when you pick up the boys, I would suggest a drive down the coast and settle in Westport for the night. That would be less than a 2 hour drive.

One other suggestion, since you will be at Ashford Castle in Cong, if you have not seen the movie "The Quiet Man", do watch it before your trip. The Movie was filmed in Cong and on the grounds of Ashford Castle. You will recognize places from the movie when you are there.

Hope others will post more suggestions for your first days in Ireland.

Just recently added 4 golf courses to the end of this Map which might be of some interest if not seen already. http://goo.gl/maps/0gPex
