Car Rental vs. Public Transit?

Thank you!

Nothing is really set in stone yet. We are going to be there about a week, but it's a bit flexible on the exact number of days. I am thinking we will fly from O'Hare into Dublin.

I was hoping to maybe spend a few days in Galway (where my late Grandpa grew up!) and the last couple days somewhere near Dublin perhaps.

I know many things will be closed or have limited hours, but we like the idea of visiting when there aren't many tourists around (and it's our longest break from school, which gives us more flexibility in planning).

Hello!

My husband and I are planning our honeymoon to Ireland for December of this year. I've heard that driving in Ireland can be a bit tricky, and I'm also nervous about driving under different road rules (such as on the other side of the road!). To avoid all the stress, we are considering just using taxis and public transit to get around while we are there. How feasible is this? Will we run into trouble reaching many places? How expensive would it be when compared to renting a car (we are both 25)? Any advice at all would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on you upcoming marriage! How long will you have in Ireland? Where are you flying into and out of?

Seeing Ireland by car is always the best way since you set your own schedule, go where and when you want, stop and explore what you will. However, you will be there in December. Short days and possibly gloomy weather. If you choose a base or two wisely you can get public transportation and day tours to various places in Ireland. But you must check on them in advance as in Dec (depending on exact dates) many things wind down or can close.

Well, Dublin and Galway would be very good bases. You can travel between the two by train and get day trips into the countryside.
