B and B Rates

Dear Michele and fellow adventurers,

My cheapskate side is trying to assert itself and I need some sense talked into me.

I'm on the verge of reserving a bed and breakfast in April for 40 euro per person per night, on a recommendation from Michele in her book.  Then a little voice says, what about those B&B's you saw in that other book that say 23-30 euros per person per night?  Maybe they're just as good.

The other voice says, "If they were just as good, they'd charge 40 too!  They no doubt are aware what each other charge."  And Michele did warn, "You get what you pay for."

Cheapie chimes in, "Yeah.  I'm paying for the fresh flowers and the colorful crockery and nice paintings on the wall and all the decor stuff... when all I really need is a bed and a shower."

Then a wise, learned voice intones, "That's all the stuff your wife will love, and admire you for considering!"  And after all, you only live once and you should enjoy and be comfortable.  In another hundred years I'm gonna break even no matter what.  Or, as my friend's grandmother used to say "You're dead a long time."

I started to write the e-mail to reserve the B&B when I came into the grips of acute spendaphobia.  I need some straight talk from you guys.  Is 40 euros on a Michele-recommended spot (which I trust for its accuracy about comfort and enjoyment) the way to go?  Will I regret listening to the other voice?

My advice...if the place comes highly recommended, spend the money. I've stayed in great B&Bs for $28 a night, and I've stayed in so-so places for $42 a night. Michele's book gives you enough detail to determine if the "extras" are what you are looking for...and let's face it, your wife is worth it...and there's nothing wrong with winning a few good husband points by mentioning "I thought you might enjoy the view overlooking the hills" or "they mentioned they'd have tea waiting for us when we arrive'.

I'm a bit of a pennypincher myself, so I tend to mix it up a bit. Splurge on the ones that sound like they are right up my alley and skimp on some of the others. If nothing else, I find myself enjoying the extras OR realizing that I should listen to my inner cheapskate more often.

Note: many times location plays a big role...a place that is ten miles from town will often be much cheaper than something closeby.

These things are so much a matter of personal preference!  Yesiree is right that location can play a big part.  For my part, I always stay in the less expensive B & B's.  For instance, last summer we paid between 26-35 Euros per person.  The cheaper places were in less touristed areas, the more expensive were Galway City, or other very busy places.  Every single B&B we stayed in was ok, with most being excellent.  The only one that was a little funky was a cheap one in Miltown Malbay, County Clare.  The beds were a little saggy, it was a little dingy.  On the other hand, it was the week before the Clancy festival, and musicians were staying there.  The owner had the inside track on the music scene and knew exactly which tiny pub to go to for music, which we would never have found it on our own.

I think you tend to get a different variety of people at less expensive B & B's--fewer Americans, more Europeans.

Kevin,

My personal opinion (and from a woman's viewpoint) is where you stay can make or break a trip. Why don't you post a few B&Bs you are interested in and I will take a look to see if I have any knowledge of them?

Michelle is right, from a woman's viewpoint, where you stay can make the difference between a grumbly cranky wife and a blissful romantic wife! (Experience speaking here.)

A more expensive place isn't always better either, but sometimes it is! I have a huge pile of guidebooks and am addicted to this web-site plus tripadvisor's and fodors' web-site, and I have to tell you that Michelle really knows what she's talking about. If she likes it, it's good.

Also from the prices I've seen in Ireland, location is worth some money. Mostly from what I've seen, city centre is most expensive; in the suburbs or pleasant countryside yet still convenient to major sites is cheaper; and in the freeking middle of nowhere with nothing to recommend it is cheapest, but this is totally generalizing.

Now, I have to tell you that I haven't been to Ireland yet, but have been massively researching our first trip and am just now finishing up booking our b&bs for July 2006. Good luck and have a great trip!
