Coming to an ending with my itinerary--Thoughts?

I posted a while back about options for 8 nights/7 days in Ireland and didn't really have a clue as to the routes I was considering, but after long nights on forums, the use of AA Route Planner, and great suggestions from friends, I think I'm narrowing down the path. The suggestions I need is related to places to stay to break up the driving and the number of nights suggested for each place.

I'm thinking of this after much revision

  • Fly into Shannon Airport and pick up rental car at 1:45pm
  • I would like to see King John's Castle, Adare Manor, Cliffs of Moher, and Dromoland Castle. We thought of staying at the Oakwood Arms Hotel, but I've read so many negative reviews about it so I'm second guessing myself.
  • Suggested to not stay at Oakwoods and instead stay in Ennis for 2 nights. (Do I spend one day visiting King John's Castle, Adare Manor, and Dromoland Castle and then the next day spend entirely at Cliffs of Moher?)

After Ennis is where I start getting messy because the sky's the limit for options of routes, but time isn't my friend. I can't begin to tell you how many options and pieces of paper and maps I've drawn on to think of what to do. I've come so close to just scrapping it all and paying to hire a travel agent to organize it all. Well, I did do that but the price she gave me was outrageous and there were things on there that I didn't want to see and that was mostly the big touristy spots.

  • Drive from Ennis to view the Dingle Peninsula. Possible places I was thinking I could stay is either Killarney, Macroom, and Kenmare.
  • From either Killarney, Macroom, or Kenmare (or whatever other option you suggest), travel via routes of Cahir and Cashel. Thinking of staying in either Kilkenny or Kildare. I only say these options because I'm trying to make it to Dublin but would like to stop along the way there to see Glendalough and Luggala Estates to see Lough Tay.

Then finish the trip with what I'm hoping to be 2 nights in Dublin.

Ugh! Why can't I make this easier than I have been? I tried the whole planning according to an arch, then I got a travel guide and it all went downhill from there that now I don't know what I want.

I'm driving by the way from Shannon and getting rid of the car in Dublin because there is no need for it then.

You do know that Adare Manor and Dromoland Castle are hotels? Since you arrive at 1:45 you might want to drive directly to the Cliffs of Moher and overnight nearby. You could see Dromoland, King John's Castle & Adare the next day on your way south. Depending on how long you stay at each venue you could make it to Killarney. Killarney is a good base for the SW. Kilkenny is a great little city and there is plenty to see and do around it too.

Yeah I know they're hotels,

Only wanted to see them because my husband's big on golf and it looked like they had gorgeous courses. We're not going to play on them but just wanted to see it and take a quick pic then we'd be on our way. So if I get there early like 1:45 and head to the Cliffs of Moher, would I still want to spend 2 nights in Ennis?

When I used the route planner it does show that Killarney is closer from Dingle than Kenmare and Macroom, but then when I factor in the other stopping points in the route to Dublin I'm not seeing a real difference in distance and time between staying in either Kilkenny or Kildare before heading towards Glendalough, Luggala, and ending in Dublin.

I guess it might just end up being a preference choice really. Aside from all this, what I'm still not finalizing is the number of nights to spend in each area so I can start booking hotels because I know it's getting to be a busy time of year for the area.

Thanks again for all your help. My husband just laughs at me when he comes home and sees more pieces of paper with cities and maps. I told him I've talked to so many people on these forums that when I go to Ireland I'll be able to just hear their name and know who they are.
