Where to start?

Hello Everyone!

Ireland is my dream vacation!  So I've decided to start planning.  Only problem, I have no idea where to start!  I want to see a little of it all!  I would really like to see some castles and ruins, the beautiful countryside, and anything else!  I've never traveled overseas so this would be my first venture.  I'm really excited but I need a startling point and some guidance please.

the trip would be at least a year to 18 months away.  There are five of us and at that point the youngest would be 3!  I'm not sure the best way to go for families.  Do B&B's have rooms that can accommodate that many?  Or would we be better off in a hotel?  Would renting a car be best or wold we be better sticking to one area?

Thanks for any and all help!

Jennifer,

Welcome to the forum. Good idea to plan ahead. That way your trip will be the very best that it can be for you and your family. If staying in B&Bs or hotels you will probably need two rooms for five people. There are a few places that could accommodate all of you in one room but they can be difficult to find. Another alternative is to rent a cottage, house or condo that has a couple of bedrooms. That can be very cost effective for a family. But it will mean staying put for several days to a week in one place. You can read more about self-catering rentals here: http://www.irelandyes.com/irelandselfcatering.html

I suggest you go to your local library and check out a few Ireland guidebooks. Read up on what Ireland has to offer and make a list of what appeals. You won't be able to see it all. But we can help you refine your "wish list" to a manageable size that will work for your trip.

Should you rent a car? If at all possible, YES! It will give you the freedom to see what you want, when you want on your own terms.

Jennifer,

As I was reading your posting...two thoughts came to mind

Self-catering

People Mover

traveling with a toddler is always interesting...throw in jet lag and radical time zone change...along with unfamiliar sleep areas... it can be a bit of a challenge

I would also side with self-catering... if you go off-season ...April/May/Early June... you will sometimes find a self-catering that will let for three days instead of a full week...

there are advantages to staying put in one spot for a week though... you can stick to your home routine for your toddler... and they will sleep better not changing beds frequently... Also, you begin to get a sense of place...

Three-night stay in Dublin allows you a day for the zoo and a day for family friendly sight-seeing in the City

Now...to the People mover... that is what they call mini-vans... it will be more costly...but opt for an automatic...less things to remember... They will tell you that a people mover seats 8-9... I would like to meet those mythical folks someday... six with all the gear was a tight enough fit on our last trip over...

Let us know how we can help as you progress in your planning

Slan Beo,

Bit
