Arriving in Shannon on August 23, 2014 and driving to Galaway. We will spend two nights there. Our first night we will stay in a Thatched roof cottage 9 miles outside of Galaway. The second night, We would like to stay in Galaway to walk home from evening pub entertainment. I would like some suggestions as to where to stay in Galaway? We need a room for myself and my husband and one for our 3 college sons.I would also like to know favorite places to not miss seeing while we are in Galaway. I love reading about all the experiences shared on this forum it is one of the most exciting ways to get ready for our trip.
The only times that I've ever actually stayed IN Galway were some time ago -- April, 1999 and Feb, 2002. BOTH times, we were a party of six and we stayed at the Jury's Inn, at the foot of Quay Street, near the Spanish Arch. It was a GREAT location (with a discounted Parking Garage along side) but I don't know how well it has weathered the years . . .
The hotel was clean, but kind of 60's Modern, with large rooms. We were only there, to sleep and shower, though.
I THINK Michele has a hotel rec nearer to Eyre Square, though . . .

Galway City: hop-on hop-off bus tour. One hour narrated tour & get on and off the bus all day at the sites you prefer. Departures: Eyre Square every 30 minutes 10:15am – 5:15pm. (Or you can park and walk or get a walking tour from the tourist office.)
Michelle the park House looks lovely, but for two rooms for the five of us it would cost 429. That's a bit pricey with all we'd like to do for 9 days, I may have to book a B&B a little further out from Galway maybe.
Then again, the reviews and location look so wonderful that I may just splurge and go for it....

It's probably NOT as nice as Park House Hotel, but it was decent enough, back in the day -- and appears to have undergone a refresh, since then. I really like the location, personally.
For 24 Aug, it looks like 109 Euro per room only, or 139 Euro per room, for B&B. I wouldn't opt for the B&B -- 60 Euro should buy a LOT of Breakfast PLUS, off-site.
It was a very good day yesterday. I received a kayak alert on Aer lingus summer specials. I booked all five of our airline flights . It took me a few hours as we are all travelng to Shannon on different days from different cities and meeting up there. The tickets were all under $1000 except for the JFK Shannon nonstop rountrip which was $1127. Think they were a good deal, what it was expecting to pay and best of all I am done worrying about them!
The Marless house is booked. Does anyone know anything about Abbey View photo attached, it has very good recommendations on several sites and is about 30 Euro per person per night.
sorry, it is a bit confusing as my sons live in three different cities while finishing college or pursuing their new careers.
Three of us, myself ,my husband and youngest son are arriving in Shannon on 8/22 at 6am, the next son arrives in Shannon on 8/23, and the final son arrives on 8/24.
I need one room for 3 on August 22. I will then need 2 doubles on August 23 and will need a triple and a double on the 24th- which will most likely be the thatched roof cottage on that final night near Galaway.
I haven't been to Abbey View. I've stayed at Lawndale many times. It is simple, basic and not fancy but is clean and comfortable. It is in Salthill overlooking Galway Bay perhaps a 15 minute walk to the city. It is like staying at your grandmother's house (in a good way). Margaret Walsh has lived in Galway for many decades and is a very nice host. If you want a "boutique" B&B this is not the place.
Seabreeze Lodge is a "boutique" B&B but is a couple of miles from the city. I stayed there last time and it was wonderful. Unfortunately Marless is so popular it is almost always fully booked.
