Rental cars and Ferries

So, we will be arriving at Shannon at 7 a.m. on 9/11. Since we won't be checking into our self-catering at Ivy Bridge Farm Cottage until 9/13, we thought we would head over to Dingle for the first two nights stay.

Is there a ferry to shorten the drive from Shannon to Dingle, and if so, are there any problems taking a rental car on?

There is no ferry to shorten the Shannon/Dingle trip. Instead head toward Limerick. You will see signs for the toll tunnel. Take it under the river to avoid driving into Limerick City. It will save you time and traffic. There is no problem taking a car on a ferry within Ireland but you usually cannot take a ferry to another country with a rental car.

Shorten the journey? yes (by under a mile), take less time? definitely not. The ferry is great if you aim to / have time to, explore south west Clare, for all else the tunnel option will shorten the time by about 40 minutes plus however long you were waiting at the quay.

Thanks for the advice. That is what I was thinking looked like the most realistic way to go.

It looks like both of our Tesco phones have run out of time over the past two years...do you know if there is a Tesco store on the way that wouldn't be too far out of the way, or cause us to go into Limerick city?

There is a large, 24 hour Tesco at a roundabout just AT the turn off for the route through the Tunnel (just outside of Limerick), but it can be hard to access -- particularly if you are unfamiliar with the Tunnel route.  You would actually need to Exit the N18 onto the R445 at Junction 4, and then follow the R445 through two roundabouts, to a THIRD roundabout -- Coonagh Cross.  The Tesco will be to the Left (the first exit).  Departing the Tesco, if you drive THROUGH the Coonagh Cross Roundabout, the road will take you to another roundabout.  Taking the THIRD exit will bring you back to the Tunnel road (N18), at Junction 3.

Alternately, along the N21, beyond Adare, there's another one, in Newcastle West.  It is just off the N21, on the Left-Hand (South) side and has Mobile Phone Sims.  I purchased one there, in March/April of 2011.
