My wife and I are arriving in Dublin in 7 days on a fly and drive. Every time we go over our route we change our minds on where we want to go. My question is this. Should we stay in one central location for 8 days and day trip, or should we stay in different locations as we travel?
As Michele said, SO much depends upon what sites you want/plan to see. I really can't think of any ONE location that ideally suits all destinations. Distances and travel times make some 'moving around' almost mandatory ...
How long is your visit? What do you want to see? What would you really wish to see?
And, what do you absolutely HAVE TO see?

You are not going to see everything with 7 weeks so 7 days just means deciding the must see from would like to see. If you want to have fixed bases you will most likely need 2 or three. Just remember you will be lucky to average anything more than 35mph so do not overstretch or overplan. Less tends to be more over here.

First of all let me thank you all for the answers. About a half hour after posting the question we decided moving around would be better. We will be there for 8 days and our plans are not set in concrete, we know how we like to stop and see things. Our tentative plans include, Carlingford, the Giant's causeway, Lisdoonvarna, Cork, and Dublin is what we'd like to see, but we understand if we can't see it all. Again thank you for your replies.
We try our best to make visits to Ireland 'Happy' occasions. Often times, that requires disabusing posters of the incorrect notion that Ireland is a small, quickly covered island!
Cork seems to be the 'Odd Man Out'-- a bit TOO far off your route to be worth the time. Lisdoonvarna is a STRETCH, but possible.
Carlingford is a beautiful place, well worth a night or two. The Giants Causeway also places you very near to Dunluce Castle, the Carrickarede Bridge and Bushmills. Between those two destinations is the Antrim Coast, the Glens of Antrim and Co. Down -- justly famous for the Ards and the Mountains of Mourne! Northern Ireland is a Special Place -- quite worthy of as much time as you can spare.
From the Causeway, there is NO 'Direct' route to County Clare -- but numerous 'possibilities'
Much depends upon how much 'windshield time' you're willing to take, and what constitutes ABSOLUTE 'Must See' places . . .

This is a 10 day plan I did for a young Australian couple http://goo.gl/maps/gl8uv breaks down to 10 days but could be trimmed to 8. As said Cork is the cut,, is it a deal breaker or can you leave the south west points until next time?

Thank you again for your help. We decided to drive to Carlingford for a night or two, then just wing it from there and and go where ever the wind leads us.
