Booking Accommodation - how far ahead?

Hi

We are two couples going to Ireland (Eire) early July for 8 days.  We are driving and looking at staying in B&B's and guesthouses.

Just wondering how far ahead we should book accommodation once we have decided on our route.

Thanks

Jan in Canada

Jan,

If my business so far for 2006 is any indication of how busy Ireland will be this year then I think it will be a very busy year. As soon as you have a firm itinerary I suggest you book your places to stay. Feel free to post any itinerary you come up with and I will be happy to comment. And you can always get help here with your accommodations too.

Jan, thanks for asking a question I've been wondering about since some of the folks here have already run into "no vacancies" for summer trips.

Michele, what about September? How far ahead (in general) would I need to book rooms for then?  I know September is still considered part of the "high" season, but is it as busy/crowded as summer?

I didn't think I could swing a trip again this year, but a lucky twist of fate brought me a chance to earn some "mad money" and naturally my thoughts immediately went to Ireland.   I was thinking I might try my solo adventure to Dublin and the surrounding areas .....

Hi

Thanks for your replies.  We are sorting out where we want to go this month (hopefully).  It is rather difficult as our friends live in England and us in Canada...long distance cooperation!

As soon as we have our route, I'll post it for comments.  Thanks.

I would say that September is much less likely to be sold out.  However, June, July and August are high season, and I'm already coming across booked places for our June/July trip.  Glad to know I've got them all booked as of today!  Most of the places I'm staying near are high-tourist areas (Killarney, Kilkenny, Dublin, Ennis) so pre-booking is a very smart idea for high season.

As for keeping trip communications... have you tried a website, if one of you has the ability?  I've learned how to do basic website design and set one up just for our trip -- complete with itinerary, costs, hotels, etc... it's here if you want to see:

Maggie,

September is going to be busy this year. Many people are traveling there for the Ryder Cup (Sept 22-24) at the K Club in Co. Kildare. Many things are already booked up in the area (as far as Dublin) for the week around then. These people will also be traveling around Ireland before and after the Ryder Cup.

Although not as busy as July/Aug, September 2006 will be much busier than usual. My best advice is to start booking things when your dates are firm.

Thanks for the heads-up about the Ryder Cup dates and location.  I'll have to think about what I want to do.

GreenDragon, glad you have your b&bs booked, me too as of today!

I got most of the places I wanted booked for July, although there were a few smaller ones which didn't answer even after repeated e-mail inquiries, so I assume they might be full already.

jetred, the sooner you book, the better your chance of getting not only the exact b&b or hotel you want, but you also get more choice of rooms that way...you can request a specific room, once you learn about which ones are available. Both Michele and the b&bs I e-mailed help me with these choices. Good luck.
