Just received my MasterCard replacement today. It was due to expire soon. I had gotten it back in 2009 to use to Waive the CDW on a rental car. It is a World Card from Citi bank and is a bronze. Discovered it has a "chip" imbedded in it! Will now be able to use it for our Oct trip to Ireland for fuel purchases at self serve petrol stations, and any where else that may require that type of card!
A credit card account that I have used for nearly 15 by Visa and issued by my local bank was also updated within the past year. Changed the card and number for no apparent reason. However no chip in that one.
Not sure if the Citi bronze World MasterCard is still eligible for waiving CDW or not.
Dan
I just got a new credit card from Bank of America with a chip. They are slowly changing over here in the US. Finally catching up with the rest of the world. Be sure to get a PIN to go with the card.
I was ticked that my world MC has been changed to a Visa.
Checked on the paperwork associated with the card and nothing stated about a pin. Went on Citi web sight to get more info. They claim that a PIN number is not available. It is a swipe and signature card. Learned that all credit cards will have the chip technology by 2015.
I would assume merchants or anyone who accepts credit cards will need to update their equipment in order to give the customer the added layer of protection that this technology offers. Amazing that the leader of the free world is almost 10 years behind 80 some countries of the world!
It'a all about MONEY! They need to change over the machines, infrastructure, etc. The cc companies have been dragging their feet because it costs $$$.
My BA card has PIN (had to ask for it) so I'm thinking it will work in Ireland like a true chip and pin. You might want to phone them and see what they say.
Dan -- if Citi won't provide you with a PIN, you can use the card in chip readers, but you still have to sign...or the the magnetic strip can be swiped. So, it's chip & sign or swipe and sign. I recently got a card with a chip, but the issuer would not enable a PIN (yet). Baby steps...maybe 2015 will be the year chip & pin will make some progress in the US. The card issuers are starting to push for it because of the recent well-publicized security breaches.
Unfortunately all US issued cards are chip and sig priority. The ones that are advertised as chip and pin will still default to signature, with the pin only when sig is not available.
Aimee, you are correct. While I enjoyed the ability and ease to use chip technology, I still had to sign. Only in two situations- at a self-serve check out at Tesco, and at a Three store, was I unable to get my chip card to work.
