Excess Insurance

I'm trying to decide if (1) it is worth purchasing excess insurance to supplement our World MC coverage and (2) if so, who still offers it to US citizens?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, this info is most current: www.moneymaxim.co.uk/pages/faq-non-uk-residents-expat-car-hire-insurance.htm

I bought a 12 month, Europe-Only policy from Questor in 2013 for 49 GBP and renewed it in March, for June of 2014 - June of 2015.  They gave me a 'Renewal' discount of just under 2 GBP.  Haven't had any claims, so can't speak as to their Service.  After wacking a pothole and 'Eating' 350 Euro worth of tire and wheel damage (since MC does NOT cover tires) I've bought the extra coverage every year -- just for the 'Peace of Mind'!

I used Questor last time too. Never had a claim so I don't know how good they are with payouts. If I remember correctly they cover windshield, tires and undercarriage.

www.icarhireinsurance.com has this coverage:

Annual - Excess Europe (Europe Excess)
info
Your annual premium is £35.99
offer

Europe Territory Only
£6,000 Excess Cover (£6,000 single incident limit)
Covers damage to bodywork, windscreens, tyres, roof and undercarriage
Covers up to 9 named drivers in the rental agreement
Covers Local in-Country Rentals
No distance restrictions from main residence
Price includes Insurance Premium Tax (IPT)
Multi-trip policy - take as many as you want!
65 Day Continuous Cover on any one rental agreement
Towing and Breakdown cover included as standard!

it sounds pretty good, and is underwritten by CHUBB Insurance (a name I recognize).

Just want to be sure - World MC doesn't have any issues with making this purchase?

As far as I know, MC only prohibits buying coverage from the Car Hire company -- so, I choose to believe it IS permitted.

Besides, it covers things that MC does NOT - tires, undercarriage and glass, so it seems worthwhile.

That's a good price and, as you said, a familiar name.  Does coverage begin on date of purchase, or do they allow you to specify a start date?  That becomes important for maximizing your coverage dates, to try and get two trips out of a single policy ... biggrin

it does allow me to pick the start date. Do you think I'll be safe starting on the day we pick up, or would you start it the day before?

I would begin with the start date (I think coverage usually begins at Midnight) to maximize your Annual 'Window', but a day early probably wouldn't make THAT much difference.

I've glanced at the policy (briefly) and on First Reading it appears to look like very good coverage.  I'll keep them in mind for when my renewal comes due -- as the seem to cover mis-fueling and lost keys -- as well as a few other incidentals.

I haven't had a chance to look at that yet, however be sure they will cover those from the US. Some policies only cover European drivers.

If you check MC's terms you must decline insurance from the car company. It says nothing about any other insurance. Put it on another card and they never need know about it anyway.

I just purchased the excess insurance coverage I noted above. I've been watching Dan Dooley's prices for the past 6 months, and the prices have only changed a couple of dollars - up or down. Monday I'll have Keith call their NJ office to get the reservation made.
