There are no pubs in the Republic that allow smoking so you'll find people standing outside the doors to pubs, shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. having a cigarette. Smoking outside is permitted, but I'm not sure if there are restrictions on pubs/restaurants with outside facilities.
I appreciate your response. My boyfriend and are planning our trip leaving the U.S. on June 1. He just found out that Ireland is non smoking and isn't pleased with me, as he planned to spend his time in pubs while I shop. I checked some web sites that said many of the pubs were setting up outdoor seating so that their smoking customers would have a place to be. I sure hope we can find some or my boyfriend is going to be unhappy.
If there is anyone out there with information on this please advise. I know it seems like a non important issue but it isn't for us.
Many pubs have set up covered outside smoking areas. Other pubs have "beer gardens" outside. Since there are no shortage of pubs in Ireland I think your boyfriend will be able to find what he wants.
Hey Kimberley, tell your man to not feel alone, I too am of the habit and will seek him out where I can when I go. Tell him if you two are going in Sept. I will seek him out as I know the temptations and addictions(as I'm sure most humans do about something or other!) We are only human! There is many more sins than what we do.
Thanks for all your comments and for the information. I'm sure I will have many more questions now that I know we are going to have a trip free from nicotine fits. I too smoke so I'm sure by the time our trip was through I'd would have had my own fit if I couldn't find somewhere to smoke. Our trip is scheduled for June 1. I am excited and hope that it's as wonderful as my dreams. I am going to fly into Shannon, rent a car and drive until I reach Dublin 7 days later. Whatever I find in between I look forward to.
