Like Melissa, I've got all of our lodging booked for our trip (May). Now I'm thinking about other details of each stop, and I'm on to food. I've read through many, many threads on various boards about favorite restaurants, but I'm looking for current views with a twist. The twist--I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I eat dairy and eggs but no meat (including poultry, fish, seafood). My partner and Mom both eat meat. I know from our 2002 trip that a vegetarian can eat pretty easily in Ireland. The produce was great, the dairy devine. Most meals were not "special" for me, but even pub food was more than adequate (toasties sans meat never actually got boring for lunch!). This trip, however, I'd like to consider a couple of special meals. With that in mind, any recs for vegetarian friendly special dining? We'll be staying in Roundstone (O'Dawds will work--but what about towns near Roundstone?), Galway (Salthill), Castlegregory, Kenmare, Bunratty. Also, several folks have recommended Monk's Pub in Ballyvaughan for lunch on day 1 (en route to Roundstone). I know the place is known for seafood; any comments on veggie options?
It's great to hear that your reservations for lodgings are also wrapped up for your upcoming trip. Your question is very interesting. As you know dining vegetarian in Ireland is pretty easy. I have yet to see a menu without vegetarian options. Below are some restaurants that I enjoy in the areas you mentioned:
Roundstone: O'Dowd's (of course) & Mitchell's in Clifden
Galway: Kirby's & Park House Hotel.
Castlegregory: The Shores Country House does dinners for those staying there and I'm sure Annette would make a vegetarian meal to knock your socks off.
Kenmare: An Leath Phingan has fab Italian food. The made from scratch tortelloni is to die for. I also like Jam & the Purple Heather for lunch. The Lime Tree is always excellent. For something extra special (and expensive) you could try the Park Hotel or Sheen Falls Hotel.
Bunratty: The Creamery, Gallagher's, Radisson Hotel, PJ's (in Bunratty Shannon Shamrock Hotel), and of course the banquets and ceili provide vegetarian options but should be ordered in advance.
I do think we'll try dinner at the Shores (and that is where we are staying). I'll take a look at your other recs for a second splurge/special night. I really loved O'Dawds. We ate there both Roundstone evenings in 2002. I think I might have had the same dinner both times, but both evenings were just lovely. There's so much more than the meal that makes something special!
Be sure to give Annette advance notice about your food needs so she has time to plan a menu and shop. She is very creative and I'm sure it will be a treat.
We have been living in the galway/salthill area since october. You can't go wrong with Roberta's on the main drag in salthill - the best italian i have had in ages - and i am from san francisco. it is right next to subway. (i know it is vague, but i still don't know the street names well)
another of our favorite things is the open air farmer's market on weekends in Galway city center. they have the best food booths that are completely vegetarian. my favorite is a falafel shop near the cathedral, my husband prefers the savory crepes near sheridan's cheesemongers shoppe. there are also great veggie curries and soups to be had at every turn.
we are not vegetarians, but since moving here, the fresh produce is of such a great quality and the variety of choices is truly amazing.
Thanks for the additional info for oopsy. I haven't been to the Farmer's Market myself since I tend to avoid Galway on weekends (very busy and crowded). It looks like I will have to experience that soon.
Yes, the market is in action on Sundays albeit at about 75% of the vendors compared to saturdays.
The other variation on sundays, things don't gear up into full swing before noon. Nothing is happening in Galway before noon on a Sunday. That may be typical of all of Ireland, but I can't say that for sure.
