I will be leading a group tour in Ireland in early October and will need a charter bus service to transport my group (max 20 people). I've done tours in Ireland before, but always very small groups of 5-6 people and I've just rented a van and handled the driving myself. So, chartering a bus service is a new experience for me. Any recommendations on best companies to contact for this? Any tips on using a charter service in general? Our tour activities will be focused near Killarney, Kenmare, and the Ring of Beara, and our lodging is in Glengarriff, so a company close by would be good (I think?). I have checked out Butler's website - they look pretty good. Has anyone used their services before? Any feedback on your experiences with any of the charter companies - who is good, who to avoid - would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I have not personally used chartered buses in Ireland. I suggest you call Tourism Ireland for some referrals. CIE Tours is Ireland's national tour company. You will want to put them on your list of who to contact as they do custom tours and rentals.
There are a number of Bus companies in Killarney area. Kerry Coaches Killarney, O Meara Killarney, O Sheas Tralee
I am looking at doing some tourist guide work next year when I retire. I was looking at providing guided tours including transport. To take up to 8 passengers in a car / minibus requires the driver to have a SPSV driving licence and the vehicle needs a SPSV licence and MOT test.
If you are getting paid / reward as driver / tour leader you need to have a SPSV driving licence. A hired vehicle will not have the required SPSV licence and MOT.
There would be insurance implications in the event of an accident
Hiring a bus for all group sizes would be best
If you are aiming to do the guide part of a tour then there are any number of small mini bus operators in Golden Pages, chat with a few of them armed with a couple of possible dummy routes and see if they would be interested in a collaboration? you provide the guide part, they provide the driver/bus.
It is an avenue I was going to pursue but I wouldn't get the licences on health grounds and the insurance is an investment to say the least. best of luck with your endevour but you might be better asking about it on Boards.ie as I don't think any other travel forum would let the question run.
