Killarney restaurants and pub ideas please

We enjoyed Murphy's on College Street and Danny Mann's on Main Street (recall it was in the Grand Hotel) for good music. Seems Mann's had music most nights, and Murphy's on weekends. Also if you get out in the area, Kate Kearney's Cottage is worth seeing once -- near the entrance to Gap of Dunloe. They do a traditional Irish Nights music and dancing show that is interesting.

How long are you in Ireland? Why seven nights in Killarney? It is a great location for day trips to Dingle to the northwest or south to rural Cork areas, but I think you'll find you have actually seen most of what you want to see in Killarney in a day or so. If you venture to West Cork would suggest stops in Bantry and Kenmare -- both lovely villages!

The Danny Mann is in the Eviston Hotel and is a great place if you want an anywhere in the world except Ireland Irish pub. If you want a pub with a few locals around the bar then Connors and Tattler Jacks regularly get my custom. Both do decent pub food but asking the locals where is good to eat always gets up to date information. many of this years guides have last years chef's.

Killarney is a great base for the whole of Kerry and parts of Cork, even Limerick is within the scope of a day trip. You already have a plan so all I will suggest is taking time for Beara and just go stand in St Mary's with your eyes closed for 30 seconds or so, if there is a god maybe he lives there.

Geno, we have rented a self catering in Killarney for the week and plan to do exactly as Tony has suggested - use it as a base for the area. We thought we would spend a few days in and near the town of Killarney and then have a few day trips on our list. Beara is definitely on that list. I stayed in Bantry 9 years ago and always promised myself I would go back to that area. I'm hoping we get a few days of decent weather that would allow us to appreciate the beauty of Beara. Any other suggestions for day trips?

Tony - I loved your comment about St Mary's. It was on my list but now I will highlight it as a must see

Using Killarney as a base for 7 nights is exactly what we have done on our last two trips to Ireland. Many will think it's too much, but we found it to be most enjoyable and relaxing.

Killarney is great for taking day trips, self drive or tours with local companies. So much to see in and around Killarney itself plus we did day trips to Dingle, Blarney/Cobh, the ROK, Beara and the Gap of Dunloe. At the end of the day we had our home base in Killarney to relax or enjoy the night life in the town.

Our favorite restaurant in Killarney is Mac's on Main Street.

There are lots of good restaurants in Killarney. One I continually return to and have never had a bad meal at is Mac's of Main Street. For something upscale try Treyvauds.

We also liked a place called Cronin's, however that was a few years ago, so not sure what the reports are the grub there recently.

Been to Ireland 5 times also and bypassed Killarny until this last trip, and sorry we originally got bad advice from St Rick that it was "too touristy". We Liked the food and music at Murphys and there was a good fish and chips shop across the street in the vicinity of Murphys ice cream. Can't recall the name but read my trip report "14 days of High Adventure" here on forum and you will get an idea of how much we loved the boat ride and pony trap ride "thru the gap" in Killarney Nat Park! And the name of the fish shop too! Ross castle is just awesome, a great setting on the East end of the lake.
As for day trips, Beara gets my vote as "Thee Most Scenic" in all of Ireland. Been there 3 times and feel the need to return again. In fact, been thinking about spending a whole week on The Bearra sometimes!
A week in Killarney will be great! Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

Thanks so much for the great advice on restaurants and day trips. My list for Killarney has gotten longer now. I'm so glad we decided to stay there for a week! Sounds like we're going to need every minute.

Dan I was following your trip report while you were writing it. I loved it as you travelled thru several areas that we hope to see on this trip. Actually it was your report that led me to getting rooms at Ballyseede Castle for one night. Even tho the four of us are just a little ( smile ) older than your granddaughter we agree that every girl needs to be a princess at least once!

Another question if I may. I have read great things about a restaurant called Quinlans in Killarney. Any opinions on if I keep that one on the list?

Quinlans is a Fish and Chip shop on High St. They might call it a restaurant because you can sit in and eat, you can get freshly caught fish (same day) in there as many places but its a bit up on price. Its also closed before the pubs get going so no good for supper on the way back to the hotel.

Tony is right on top of it, as usual. I looked back in my journal and Quinlans Seafood bar is where we had 2 cod meals with chips and mushy peas and 3 beverages for 33Euros. It was quite yummy! Ranked #8!out of 139 restaurants in Killarney on TA with a 4.5 ave rating.....for what ever that is worth. I say Give it a try, if you enjoy fish and chips.
As for Ballyseede, awesome experience! It was one of our best lodgings of the whole trip. Everyone should do a "splurge night" at least once in Ireland! Say hi to Hilda's ghost and make sure to seek out the stone herding dog in the castle pub!

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to reply. I've noted all of your great suggestions on my list that keeps getting longer. I think I have it all organized but might be back with more questions as we get closer to departure date. We leave a month from today so I'm very excited.
