Nice Bed and Breakfast in Ballinasloe or surrounding area?

Do you have a recommendation of a nice Bed and Breakfast around Ballinasloe?  My grandfather was from there and we want to spend a couple of days around there.  Would it be good to stay there as far as accomodations, or perhaps better in Athlone or another town?  Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete:

I've never stayed in Ballinasloe but visited there briefly by boat via the River Suck (yeah, I know). My memories, other than an amusing toilet adventure that still send smy wife into hysterics, where of a rather uninteresting town. There are a few cute pubs, but nothing terribly noteworthy. I'm sure there was much that I missed as we didn't spend a lot of time there. Still, when I mentioned to local folk down river that we had visited Ballinasloe, they seemed to have the same reaction. Still, Grandpa was from there, so you should certainly explore.

I would guess that there are some nice spots along the Shannon or Lough Ree to stay. The Athlone city center is nice and the castle is certainly worth a visit. As we ventured out of the city center in Athlone (again on foot), we were less impressed.

Pete,

I don't have any personal recommendations for B&Bs in Ballinasloe. There is only one in the Town & Country book. There are lodgings on this page: http://www.ballinasloe.com/content/view/44/65/

It is a rather undistinguished town known for its October horse fair. You might be interested in this site: http://www.ballinasloe.com/

You would have more accommodation choices in Athlone. I highly recommend Glasson Stone Lodge in Glasson Village just a couple of miles north of Athlone. I think it would make a perfect base for your explorations.

Pete,

Make your reservations as soon as you have a firm itinerary. This year is busy in Ireland. Tell Carmel hello from me when you are at Glasson Stone Lodge. I think you will enjoy your stay and the little village of Glasson that is also called "Village of the Roses". There are a couple of nice pubs and restaurants in walking distance of the B&B.

Hi Pete,

We stayed at Glasson Stone Lodge for 2 nights during our Sep 2004 trip.  We loved it.  There was curb construction during our stay and Carmel worked with the construction crew to make sure we could get in and out of her driveway.    She & Oliver were such wonderful hosts.  We also ate in both restaurants in town and the food was delicious.  I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again when in the area.
