We loved our trip to Ireland last March and are planning a return trip this year. Last year we left Galway city and met a wonderful lady who gave us a walking tour of the Burren area as well as several archeological sites. The weather was horrible, even by Irish standards, with high winds and driving rain. We missed the cliffs of Moher as they closed due to the weather. Needless to say, after a full day out in the rain and cold, we were exhausted. We barely made it to Ennis, where we promptly fell asleep before heading to Dingle the next day. We traveled through Limerick. This year, I would like to travel the coast southward from Galway, stopping at the cliffs and any interesting areas. We are again heading toward Dingle or Killarney. This time we would like to take the ferry. I am wondering if you have any suggestions for a stopping point (place to stay)along this route? I am looking at the Miltown Malbay area since I read it is an Irish music center. We really enjoy the pubs, restaurants and music). However, should we travel on a bit farther to make the next day an easier drive? Also, any suggestions for interesting views, castles or short walks along this route?
The weather must have been horrendous for the cliffs to close. Hopefully, your next trip will have better weather. I suggest you continue down the coast of Clare to Loop Head at the tip of the peninsula. It is a very scenic drive. Although the cliffs are not as high as the Cliffs of Moher, Loop Head has a totally different vibe. Along the way are many coastal walks such as the Bridges of Ross. There is a cliff walk in Kilkee. In Kilrush I recommend Hilcrest View B&B. Kilrush is not far from the ferry and will set you up for a quicker trip to Dingle the next morning. After the ferry - in Ballybunion - is another nice cliff walk and lovely beaches.
Miltown would be a good stop if you're a fan of traditional music and like great pubs. Friel's (frielspub.ie) and Clancy's would be the first places I would check into. I don't think it's too long of a drive from there to either Dingle or Killarney. Many years ago my dad and I did that drive from Doolin and took the ferry and it was fine.
Another good stop along the way is the Roadside Tavern/Burren Brewery in Lisdoonvarna for the food and beer. They do have music sessions too but not every night. Mainly Friday I think. But still it's one of the first microbreweries to open up on the west coast and the beer and food are very good. www.roadsidetavern.ie/roadside/
Thank you for your advice. We will definitely try to stop in Miltown at least for lunch. I've contacted Hilcrest View directly as they and several other accommodations seem to be sold out on our date already on general booking sites. I'm not sure they have availability. We will be heading to Dingle for one night, but I'm hopeful we will arrive early enough that we will have most of that day to explore. I really wanted to spend two nights there, but I'm not sure if we feel comfortable taking the ferry and driving towards Dingle at night. The last ferry leaves at 7 and don't know if that's achievable leaving from Galway taking the coastal route. I suppose if we avoid the Conor pass on Dingle it would be easier? It sounds like I'm leaving that open as a possibility if we don't find a place to stay north of the Shannon. Following Dingle, we will head to Killarney. This site has been so helpful to me, I am going to try and write a trip report from last year. I took a few notes, but some will be from memory so it might not be great or detailed, but perhaps some of our "maiden voyage " experiences might be helpful to others.
Not sure when you were over in March last year, don't remember anything drastic? you should have been here last month
Anyway as to this year. When are you planning on coming over? there are a few festivals through the year and the odd event in the Comhaltas centre and Gloré in Ennis.
Remember there is an eastern side to the county as well and lots of good local music to be found over here by Lough Derg.

The booking sites can be problematic as B&Bs can choose to release only a room or two to them at a time. Let us know when you receive your email back and we can proceed from there.
