I use ATM's and pay cash for most transactions while in Ireland. Since my last trip was in 2014, I'm checking to find out if anyone knows if ATM machines still accept non-chip cards. My Credit Union has not yet made the switch.
New phase is contact less cards with wireless chips just touch the card onto a card reading gadget rather than swiping and signing or pushing in and entering a pin. Paid for my petrol like that this morning. To be honest I think that is a step too far. you don't get a receipt so you don't see the amount of the transaction at the time and you could be anyone using the card not even a basic security check just touch the card onto a machine and walk away. Think the limit is 30 but even so.

When I'm stores like Aldi or Lidl, I usually just jump in and swipe the cards without asking first.
If I ask, they tend to say they don't take swipe cards, but they usually do. The staff just don't see them very often and don't realize there's a spot where they can swipe. Meanwhile, at Tesco the staff usually know how to use a swipe card, but it has to be handed to the cashier and swiped on her/his register.
