Tentative Itinerary

We have finally arrived at a tentative itinerary for our trip scheduled for May 1-12.    We would appreciate any feedback/suggestions anyone has to offer.

There will be 8 of us arriving in Shannon on the morning of Tuesday, renting 3 cars to allow some 'space', and heading toward Galway.  If the weather is cooperative, we plan to head to the Cliffs of Moher on our way; if not, we will visit the Cliffs on Thursday.  We don't have a B&B booked yet (Marless House has no availability), but we are still looking and debating whether to stay in Galway for 1 night or 2.

Wednesday - Connemara Peninsula.  Not sure whether to stay in Clifden/Roundstone or to head back to Galway.

Thursday - Cliffs of Moher if unable to go on Tuesday, Burren, ferry across river.  Overnight at Glin Castle.

Friday - Sunday/Monday - Four (possibly 6) of our group will be staying at a friend's house in Milltown for 2 or 3 nights.  The remaining 4 (or 2) will be looking for a nearby B&B for 2 nights.  Any suggestions?  That will be our home base while we travel the Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry, Gap of Dunloe, Killarney, etc.

Sunday - Two (or four) of the group will head to Kenmare for 2 nights to get in a little male golf/female shopping & sightseeing.

Monday - Two of the group still at the friend's house in Milltown will head back to Shannon for their return flight while the other two (or four) head to Kenmare to meet up with the golfing/shopping people.  All 6 to overnight in Kenmare.

Tuesday - Head to Kinsale.  Stay overnight.

Wednesday - Cobh, maybe Blarney/Cashel.  Not sure whether to overnight back in Kinsale or start heading back toward Shannon.

Thursday - Bunratty Castle banquet, overnight at Park House.

Friday - Morning flight back to Boston.

Thanks for all comments, and special thanks to Michele for this informative board and the great book.  When will the 2006 coupons be out?

Gail,

With 8 people traveling together, I would suggest making reservations where possible. B&Bs don't have all that many rooms and in order for the group to stay in one place the logistics demand planning. You might also want to consider how the group will communicate with each other.

Where possible it really makes sense to spend multiple-nights instead of packing up and moving on each day. Do spend two nights in Galway and use it as a base for Connemara.

For the Milltown portion of your trip I really suggest Killarney. The places really close to Milltown like Castlemaine and Kilorglin are very small and don't offer a lot of lodgings, restaurants, etc. Killarney will be an excellent base and not too far a drive between the two.

Wednesday - Cobh, maybe Blarney/Cashel.  Not sure whether to overnight back in Kinsale or start heading back toward Shannon.  * Cashel would be ideal.

The 2006 Coupon Pack is ready, however some of the coupons have changed for 2006. For instance, I don't yet have any coupons for the banquets or Bunratty Irish Night, Knappogue Castle, etc. Many other venues have been added (such as theaters, festivals, music shows and other events) so perhaps it will compensate. If you are interested in golfing please let me know. I do have golfing discounts available but will only send them as a special request since I have a limited supply. The later in the year you can wait to get the Coupon Pack, the more will become available. If you will order about two weeks in advance of your trip you will get the maximum available at that date.

This is the ordering page: http://www.irelandyes.com/couponinfo.html Or you can order via Pay Pal: http://www.irelandyes.com/paypal.html

I will be updating my website shortly to reflect the changes for the 2006 Coupon Pack.

P.S. Thanks so much for your lovely comments about my book and the forum!

Michele,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I should have mentioned that we plan to rent cell phones so we can stay in contact with each other whenever we split off.

My husband will be golfing one day, probably in Kenmare, but Killarney is a possibility, too.  The hope was for him to golf in a town that had something to keep me occupied within walking distance of the B&B.  He would love the discount!  Thanks!

Are there any special tours/guides you recommend for any of our planned days?  We will mostly be winging it, but thought 1 or 2 tours might be fun.

We can't wait to visit Ireland for the first time, thanks in part to the enthusiasm on this board.

I don't know what your experience of planning trips for groups of friends is.  But in case it's worth anything, I have a couple tips.  I planned a trip last year for 5 friends, and we had a great time.  But generally, it's a good idea to have a plan, otherwise you spend lots of time milling around, getting nothing accomplished.  Most people are happy to have things planned for them, and really don't want to be presented with choices--they'd rather just happily go along.  At least, that's been my experience.  Also, with that many people, as has been said, you will not be able to stay together unless going to hotels or guesthouses.  However, you should easily be able to stay in 2-3 different B&Bs that would be near each other.  It's another thing that I think is best planned beforehand, just so you don't waste time.  On my own, I never book ahead, but with a group it's easier.

Gail,

Do check out the discount on cell phone rentals on my "Discounts" page. BTW, they are called mobile phones in Ireland. The golfing discounts are if you are playing a few courses not just one. There are beautiful ones overlooking the lakes in Killarney and it is a good spot for you to enjoy the town. There is a lovely walk called The Cherry Tree Walk right on the edge of town. You would swear you are way out in the countryside. I think you would enjoy that. Also plenty of shops and restaurants. Choose a B&B or guesthouse within walking distance of town.

The Gap of Dunloe Tour is something that most people really enjoy: www.derostours.com There are tours to Dingle and the Ring of Kerry from Killarney but many find them too commercial.

There are boat tours that go along the Cliffs of Moher: http://www.mohercruises.com/ In Connemara there is the Killary Harbor Cruise: http://www.killarycruises.com/ In Kenmare is Seafari Cruise: http://www.seafariireland.com/
