Hello! I just recently discovered this forum and have been reading it in anticipation of our upcoming trip to Ireland in August, 2006. Having never been to Ireland before, I would greatly appreciate any help/words of wisdom you can offer.
I’ve indicated our first thoughts for an itinerary, knowing that it will probably require a bit of revision. I realize it involves quite a bit of driving, but we are trying to see as much as possible (within reason) in the short amount of time we have. So, here goes:
Sunday: Arrive in Galway (flying from Edinburgh, Scotland from the earlier part of our trip – family wedding in St. Andrews).
Plan to stay in Galway the first night (arriving late).
Monday: Tentatively plan to visit relatives in the Claremorris area on Monday, and stay overnight again in Galway.
Tuesday: Would like to get over to Connemera for a visit, and travel on to the Lahinch or Lisdoonvarna area to stay overnight.
Wednesday: Go to see the Cliffs of Moher and then continue on the Killarney. Stay overnight in Killarney.
Thursday: Do the Gap of Dunloe tour and then continue on to the Blarney area. Stay overnight.
Friday: Go to see Blarney Castle (and kiss the stone). Travel to Glin where we have reservations at the castle.
Saturday: Return home from Shannon.
Is this plan at all doable??
I would also appreciate any suggestions for places to stay in the mentioned areas, preferably B&B’s as well as any dining/pubs that are not to be missed.
Welcome to my forum! Glad to hear you are taking advantage of all the good info that all the members here have so generously shared with others.
On the Tuesday you plan on doing Connemara, I think it is too far to head down the coast of Clare at that time. Connemara demands a whole day and is an intensive driving experience. I would spend that night in Galway as well and continue on to Killarney the next day.
I wouldn't go out of my way to see Blarney Castle but would stay two nights in Killarney. Once you get there you will see that it is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and deserves time to see. The Gap of Dunloe tour takes most of the day.
With a few alterations it is doable. For lodgings take a look at my "Lodgings" page. Click on IrelandYes Index and then on the link. You may enjoy having my book which is full of excellent places to stay, dining, pubs, sightseeing and more. You can read more about it here to see if it meets your needs: http://www.irelandyes.com/book.html
Don't know what I'm doing wrong, but my posts seem to disappear when I try to submit them.
I'll try once more. Am still working on a revised itineray. Instead of going to Connemera, we thought of heading south from Galway toward Killarney with a stopover in Tralee. The day involved would be the last day/night of the Rose of Tralee festival. A local "street-fair" festival with lots of locals sound fun. Or, would we be better off to avoid it?
Also, although I know it sounds touristy, we'd still like to visit Blarney after leaving Killarney. Our plan is to do the Gap of Dunloe tour on Thursday. Would it be feasible to drive to Blarney after that and see the castle/stone and Woolen Mill on Friday morning. From there we go on to Glin Castle. Or, should be stay in Killarney Thursday night and drive to Blarney in the morning, do the "tourist thing" and go on to Glin from there?
MJ, if you decide to do the Killarney to Blarney overnight route, I have a recommendation of a B&B on the N22 which would not be too far a drive on the first day and give you a leg up on your trip into Blarney the next. Check out Salmon Leap Farm http://www.salmonleapfarm.com/ We were very pleased.
Sorry about the problems with the disappearing posts. I always copy mine before posting (I learned that on my old forum) so that if something does happen all my work does not disappear. It is very frustrating.
The Rose of Tralee Festival sounds like fun but it will be quiet crowded. It will be challenging to find parking. If you are planning on driving down the coast of Clare you probably don't have time for Tralee. If you take the more direct route through Limerick it is much quicker and you could stop by for the fun.
I can understand the need to visit Blarney Castle and kiss the stone. For many it is a definite "must see". The grounds are lovely and perfect for a stroll. The stone is at the very top of the castle and you must go up hundreds of small spiral steps to kiss it. Since it is on your list you would probably be better off staying in Blarney and seeing everything in the morning.
