My favorite month in Ireland is May. The season is just starting and your hosts are fresh and anticipating a new season. Flowers and trees are blooming, daylight hours are long, everything is open, little lambs are gamboling around in the fields (and on the roads!). With the exception of the Bank Holiday at the beginning of the month it is not too crowded.

We've visited a number of times in April and had pretty fair weather. Our only March visit was at the end of the month, in 2011 and we had a few cold, wet days out of the week.

We've had two visits in October and the rest have been June / July visits -- which did tend to be much more crowded.

The days on either side of ST Patrick's Day (March 17) are quite busy in many locations -- with many Festivals taking place between 16-18 March.

So, if you don't like crowds, then you would be wise to avoid visiting around that time.

May, early June or September? dates to avoid would be July and August which are European as well as local Irish holidays.
