Hi all..I'm planning a trip to Ireland in September.. Unfortunately I only have ten days, 3 of which will be spent in Dublin. That leaves me with a week to travel. I'd like to go to Derry for sure (family home) but was also hoping to spend some time in Donegal. In particular Ardara, but also maybe Gweedore. I have 2 questions..
Is there any problem taking a hire car across the border?
And.. is Gaeilic (Irish language) still spoken in Donegal? Because I was on the Gweedore website (www.gaothdobhair.ie) and all the text was in both English and Gaeilic which I was surprised at..I'm just wondering though is this more a tourist thing or is the language still used in everyday life?
If you are renting a car in Dublin and going to Donegal via Northern Ireland there isn't a problem, some rental companies charge a small surcharge on the insurance, this covers recovery which hopefully you won't need
Irish is the first language in some parts of Donegal with the main Gaeltacht areas being along the west.

Be sure to mention to your car rental company that you will be driving into Northern Ireland. Some have an extra charge for doing so, others do not. Ask in advance. If you want to hear Irish spoken you can also listen to it on radio: http://www.rte.ie/rnag/
