Well, I took the plunge today and booked our air. Our actual days in Ireland will be Aug. 1 - Aug. 14 (we'll depart at 11:40 am) We'll be flying into and out of Shannon. Could really use some suggestions on an itinerary. I'll be traveling with my 79 year old mom, so we'd like to spend 3 days at each area. Looking for:
-nice, highly rated B&Bs close enough to a town; some with sheep, horses and views. Places that are a destination in themselves.
-music and Irish dancing - a couple 'shows' -a ferry ride
-spectacular seasides and rolling hills with castles
-She said she doesn't really want to visit Ring of Kerry after reading about the crowds.
-easy driving (does that exist in Ireland? Okay... 'easier' driving)
I figure if we spend 3 nights at each destination, that will make for 4 areas and the last night near the airport.
I've done a bit of reading, and here are a couple places that sound nice - just not sure how to fit them into an itinerary.Daly's in Clare. Banratty Villa.
Another question: If a rate is listed as 35 (with a funny looking E before the amount), how does that translate to U.S.?
I've never been to Ireland and am hoping somebody out there can give a rough itinerary. Thank you very much Caroline
I can get 3 nights at Emlagh B&B on the Dingle Peninsula. How would this fit in an itinerary if we'd still have 3 days left before we departed out of Shannon? Great reviews of this place. Hope there's enough to keep my mom hoppin.
Congrats on getting your tickets! Planning a trip to Ireland is half the fun of going. I know you are enjoying the process and having lots of fun surfing the internet in search of the perfect itinerary. There are many forums that provide "instant itineraries" from people who have been to Ireland a couple of times. A great resource. Whether they meet your needs or not only you can determine. Feel free to post your itinerary here when you find it and I will be happy to comment on it.
As for your mother, does she have limitations? Do you need ground floor rooms? Can she handle stairs? The answers to these questions will determine what B&Bs you book for your stay. As I recall, Emlagh Lodge does not have rooms on the ground floor. Take a look at my "Lodgings" page for places to stay. Also, my book is chock full of wonderful B&Bs that I have personally stayed at along with complete descriptions.
Once you get a firm itinerary be sure to make reservations as you are traveling in August.
Michele
P.S. The funny looking "E" before the prices stands for "euro". That is the currency used in Ireland. You can go to my "Money" page for a complete description as well as a currency converter. My website has it all, if you only take the time to explore it.
