Aillwee Cave vs Marble Arch Cave

Fellow travelers,

On our second trip to Ireland we will be flying into Shannon (I think) and driving north.  We would be able to see Aillwee Cave and/or Marble Arch Cave.  I really don't think I want to see both.  Has anyone seen both caves and if so, can you give me a preference of one over the other?

Merle,

I have been to both. Personally, a cave is a cave is a cave. A big hole in the ground with rock formations. But that's just me. Aillwee has an underground waterfall. Marble Arch has a underground lake and they take you on boats on the lake. Unfortunately when I was there the boats were not operating and I was miffed because I wouldn't have gone if I had known it. I was looking forward to the boat ride. Also, Marble Arch can be closed due to very rainy weather (it tends to flood).

Does that help in any way?

I've been in Marble Arch but not Aillwee. You didn't miss a whole lot on the boat ride Michele. It's less than 5 minutes long. I thought it was interesting and most people on the tour really liked it. The cave is closed in the off season (October-March) because it is filled with water.

Thanks for letting me know about the boat ride. I just thought it was unique and was looking forward to it.

The information was helpful but I haven't made a decision yet.  It will probably depend on how much time we have in the area and I haven't gotten to that detail of the trip planning process yet.

Thanks

Merlene
