Hi All, need some advice. I am planning a trip in May-June 2018. I am ready to purchase airfare, but am concerned about layover time at JFK. Delta has a flight arriving from Shannon at 1:52 pm and the connecting flight leaves JFK for Ft. Lauderdale at 3:10 pm. This gives us 1 hour and 18 minutes to get from the international terminal to domestic. If we clear customs at Shannon and our luggage is booked straight through, can we make the connection? I haven't been to JFK in over 20 years! and don't know how easy it is to go from one terminal to another. There is a later flight to FLL which arrives around 10pm. We still have a 2 1/2 drive to Fort Myers after that and the price increases by about $400 total (five of us going). Any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Janet
We just did a JFK layover this past October on our outbound flight, but it was Aer Lingus and JetBlue.
Are your flights all on One ticket -- or separate bookings?
With no need for Customs & Immigration (or luggage) you should have adequate time, but not with a lot to spare -- provided they are all on the same booking -- i.e., Delta to Delta -- If so, it will be the airline's responsibility to get you home (or, at least, to FLL) and they are unlikely to offer a connection that isn't achievable. I've made a number of connections in ATL on trips to / from Ireland that were 50 minutes or less -- even when distant concourse changes were needed and I think maneuvering around JFK is likely to be slightly LESS time consuming.
Why via FLL? Are the flights THAT much cheaper, or are there 'extenuating circumstances' that require flying from there?
We live in Venice and visit Ireland often. Usually fly via MCO, TPA or RSW. On our last trip, it was via JetBlue from SRQ to JFK / Aer Lingus to SNN -- but back from SNN via BOS, to RSW. Daughter dropped us at SRQ (Sarasota) and we rented a car one-way from Ft Meyers (RSW) to home. It's an option called 'Multi-City'. On round trip flights from MCO (and even, TPA) we do a Fly-Sleep-Fly 'deal with an airport hotel. The cost of the package is usually close enough to what Long-Term parking would have cost -- and it allows us to sleep prior to making the drive home.

Thanks for your quick reply, Bob! I've tried various airport combos and FLL or MIA come out substantially cheaper than RSW, SRQ or MCO! We'll rent a car to get to and from FLL for a lot cheaper than long term parking. With 5 of us, budget is an important consideration. The flights I've chosen are one ticket, so I'll trust Delta to get us home on time! LOL. Thanks again, Janet. PS...really enjoying reading about your latest trip.
JetBlue to Aer Lingus doesn't involve a terminal change, whereas Delta domestic to Delta international does. I've found terminal changes at JFK among the easiest with the train between. The variable would be going through security again, but since it's all on one ticket I agree with Bob there should't be an issue. Changing terminals in Boston is much more complicated.
We just did probably the same Delta flight with a short layover to get to Raleigh NC. There was no problem, and the walk to the bus for the other terminal was short. We had plenty of time. The terminal change time is about 15 min. Busses run frequently.
