Navan

32 days out. First 3 days will be Dublin area on a visitor Leap card. Then off to Ballina, Mayo. We are going via Navan. My wife wants to explore childhood memories of time in Navan with her grandmother. Any suggestions for what to see and do are welcome.

Well -- Just on the edge of town is Donaghmore Round Tower -- but, maybe that's just MY interest?  confuse    confuse

About 15 minutes away is Bective Abbey:  http://www.megalithicireland.com/Bective%20Abbey,%20Meath.html

Other sites:  http://www.causey.ie/ in particular, might fit the 'fond memories' search.

Athlumney Castle is close in:  http://irelandinruins.blogspot.com/2011/07/athlumney-castle-co-meath.html

As is the ruins of Ardmulcan Church:  http://www.discoverboynevalley.ie/boyne-valley-drive/heritage-sites/ardmulchan-church

and the nearby, Dunmoe castle:  https://www.discoverireland.ie/Arts-Culture-Heritage/dunmoe-castle/49094

Of course, Kells (which also hosts a fine Round Tower), Trim, The Hill of Tara and the megalithic tombs at Loughcrew aren't terribly far, either.  biggrin  biggrin

Is this your planned route?   https://goo.gl/maps/nj9m8NyKiZm

Lots to see and do in the area:

Hill of Tara
Newgrange at Bru na Boinne
Trim Castle
Mellifont Abbey
Kells High Cross & Round Tower
Cavan County Museum in Ballyjamesduff (excellent small museum) I liked listening to the recorded memories of area people.
Belvedere House and Gardens

Hey, looks like you may have to spend the week there! biggrin

Yes Bob, thats the route. Michele, I think the Boyne Valley will be a week long adventure on a future trip! Thanks for all the great suggestions. We went to Hill of Tara last summer on a day trip. Nice day.
