Thank you

Michele,

Thanks for the warm welcome in the Credit Card - Am Ex topic. This will be trip number 6. My husband's family is from Ireland so we go to a couple of off the beaten track areas - an island off the coast of Donegal and south Armagh - on each trip. We also try to see some different areas each time as well - Kinvara and Malahide, plus a stop at Clonmacnoise this trip and a return to Westport for a couple of days. I am not much of a 'poster' but really enjoy reading all the great posts from you and everyone on your forum.

Susan,

I am glad to hear you enjoy the forum even if you don't post a lot. I am intrigued by your mention of the island off Donegal's coast. You must really know some wonderful little off-beat places very well. If you haven't been to Clonmacnoise before you will enjoy that. It is in a lovely setting right on the Shannon River.

Would that be Cruitt Island?

It is Arranmore Island. The closest town is Dungloe and you get to the island on a 25 minute ferry ride from Burtonport.  The landscape is unspoiled and pretty wild; people still cut their own turf from the bog on the island. Fun pubs, great walking, hiking, and fishing, and they even have a pitch n' putt now. The view from the lighthouse cliffs over the Atlantic is amazing.

Bill,

I remember laughing when I read your trip report about passing the Statue of Liberty - we get a kick out of it when we drive by (I have heard 2 versions : the people lived in NY for a time or are transplanted NYer's).  The west central part of Donegal sure is beautiful, isn't it?

Susan,

I have often admired Arranmore Island from the mainland of Donegal. I really must make the journey there when I have time. How is ferry and is it a long trip? You must have the place all to yourself when there. It sounds like a place to go back in time.
