I am flying into shannon and was wondering where is the best place to stay? I do not mind driving a little ways out of shannon if it is wonderful place to stay at. I am thinking what i would like to do is fly into Shannon and stay in that area for a couple of days to explore it then head out. My problem is that there are things that i want to see to the north of shannon and things i want to see to south ( rock of cashel, dingle, and ring of kerry). I am thinking of landing in shannon explore the area then head north and make a circle back to shannon. What do you folks think of that.
I'm not sure how much time you have, but you can stay in Bunratty which is very close to the Shannon airport. There are loads of good B&Bs in the area (Bunratty Lodge, Headly Court, Ashgrove ....) and it's fairl;y convenient to lots of stuff. You could also head to Ennis (about 30 minutes) and there are a number of great music pubs there, or Doolin (a little further afield 1:15ish) which is just around the corner from the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, again, some famous music pubs.
You could also plan your trip so that you see a bit around Bunratty and then for your trip back south, go through western Clare (Doolin) and down the coast to catch the ferry at Killimer. That would avoid too much doubling back.
Again, it would help to know the length of your stay and your interests.
Hey bill thanks for the reply. I will be in Ireland 14 days and I like most anything. I am not planing on going to Dublin or that part of the country on this vistit. I am planning on doing the west coast along with the middle part of irleand. Thanks for any help
You can see a great deal of Ireland in 14 days. What you need to do is make a list of your "must sees", get out your calendar and a map of Ireland. Then you can start connecting the dots. Feel free to post your itinerary and I'm sure eveyone will jump in with suggestions.
If you want to stay right nearby Shannon Airport Bunratty is a good area. Go to my "Lodgings" page for some suggestion.
I think heading a bit north for the first night is very doable. I've gone as far north as Ballynahinch in Connemara and also Leenane on the first day and as far south as Killarney. For me that is about the limit that I would want to drive with jet lag and all. Some possible places to stay on the first night: Ballyvaughn, Kinvara, Galway City, Connemara, and Doolin. All good choices. If you're planning on touring the Shannon area first then Connemara is not a good idea and you're probably better off with Ballyvaughn, Kinvara, or Doolin. Bottom line though is that flying into Shannon is a good idea.
