Good Donegal hotel rate or not?

Yes, friends, I'm still out here researching options regarding Oideas Gael. I know, I know --- I need to make some decisions soon! The biggest problem is that despite many hours of searching, I can find only a tiny bit of info online about accommodations in the Glencolmcille area.

As you advised, Michele, I emailed the Glen Hotel inquiring about rates.  It took several times, but finally received a response yesterday.  With a 14 day stay they are offering a single occupancy ensuite room and breakfast @ 55 Euros per day (or room, breakfast and dinner for 75 Euros/day, but I know I'm not interested in that).

I cannot find anywhere online a published rate for this hotel, so how would I know if I'm getting a reasonable deal or not, especially given its location (I mean, if it were in Dublin I'd think it was a terrific rate!)?  Any thoughts about the cost?

I also contacted the school. Their on-campus housing is booked (they only have 8 rooms), so they emailed me a list of names and phone numbers for people who have self-catering or B & B's within 5-10 miles.  It's not too useful (there's no info at all about the places) unless I call about 30 people.

I did find out a little about the other link you had --- the Corner House B & B ---and I'm thinking it sounds like a pretty good deal.  I can have a single ensuite for 35 Euros/day and it's located close enough to the school that getting back and forth wouldn't be a concern. I just wanted some input about the hotel rate before I commit to anything.

Mark, you spent a couple days there and loved it --- please tell me more about the town!!  Is it true that Altan sometimes plays in Teelin?

Thanks for everyone's help!

Maggie,

The Glen Hotel's website has the published rates.  I don't know if you've seen it or not:

It looks like 55 euro is a much better deal than the published rate.

As far as Altan playing in Teelin .... well they used to own a pub there called Cul A Duin pub and I guess a couple of years ago while they were kicking back for a bit they would show up for sessions occasionally but they've sold the pub.  They've also recorded a CD around that time called Local Ground.  However there are still music sessions there on Saturday nights as I understand it but without as many famous folks showing up.  Its a shame because I've heard it was awesome pub to go for a session on a weekend and I was hoping to get there either this year or next.  Maybe it still is good ... only one way to find out.  I'm sure once you get into the area and ask around you'll find out where sessions are going on.  Maybe pubs like Roarty's or Biddy's in the Glen or Cul A Duin in Teelin.

What I can tell you about the town/area is first of all it is a place of incredible, natural scenic beauty.  Hauntingly beautiful.  Very, very friendly people although hard to understand because of their thick accents and of course Gaelic.  I'll never forget checking into the Glen Hotel and opening the window of my room and looking out at a flock of sheep grazing on the hotel grounds and looking across at the misty, green rolling hills dotted with sheep.  Truly Ireland at its best.  I also remember the feeling of crossing over some sort of invisible barrier as we came into the area as if we had just driven back in time.  You sort of go up in elevation through boglands with barely a house as far as you can see and then you come into this green, misty valley with cliffs and ocean.  That's Glencolmcille.  I lack the writing ability to describe it so I can't do it justice.  You'll see.

Mark.

Mark,

Thank you!  The hotel apparently has more than one website (I was accessing a different site through a link on the school's site), so thanks for the link!  And you're right --- definitely a better deal than offered online!

Sorry I missed "the Altan days" --- I really like them --- but I understand the area is still grand for music, especially Donegal fiddling (I don't know enough to know what's different about the way they fiddle in Donegal, but I'm open ...).

I'm looking forward to evenings at Biddy's and Roarty's (and hopefully other pubs in the area), not only for the music but because I'm just certain my classmates and I will speak better Irish after we've had a couple pints, eh ?!

Your description is fine.  I've found several places with photos, so I have some idea of what it looks like.  Your remembrance of the sheep and green hills and mist and ocean and cliffs works for me!

Thanks again.  I always especially enjoy yours (and Bill's) music-related posts.

Maggie

Maggie,

I think that Mark's advice for you is invaluable since he has actually stayed at the Glen Hotel. Let us know what you decide.

Michele
