Car Rental insurance

My husband and I will be traveling in Ireland doing a self drive.  We will be Picking up the car in Dublin at the airport on June 5th and dropping off at the airport on June 17th.  I have been reading and rereading about the car insurance on the rental cars.  We have a Chase Visa credit card and have confirmed they will cover us in the Republic of Ireland as long as we wave the rental car companies CDW.

I understand the coverage for damage to the vehicle.  I am confused regarding injury to ourselves if there is an accident.  Is this covered under my travel insurance?  What happens if we are in a two car accident and we are at fault.  How does the other car damage get covered and injury to the other cars occupants?

Debra, Welcome to the forum.

If you have purchased travel insurance each policy is different. Best to read the policy "fine print" or contact the company for more info. Have you inquired of your own health insurance to see if you are covered abroad?

Third Party Liability Insurance: Covers damage to people or property outside your rental car. This is mandatory and is included with every car rental in Ireland. So if you crash into another vehicle this will cover it.

Hope that clarifies things.

Please also be aware that you need to verify that the rental company accepts your Chase coverage (They PROBABLY will) -- and what conditions they apply.

In MOST cases, they will require a ''Letter of Coverage'' that is dated within 21 days of your rental specifically stating that coverage applies to the Republic of Ireland.  If you call Chase, they will email it to you and you will need to print out a copy o present at the rental counter.

There will also be a large 'Hold' placed on your card as a Security Deposit in the event you do damage to the vehicle -- which can range anywhere between 2500 to 5000 Euros.  This is above and beyond the actual rental.  If NO damage is discovered upon return, the 'Hold' is released.

Thank you, I will have to figure out how to get the letter of coverage within the 21 day period as we are first traveling in England, Wales and Scotland for 21 days. I probably can figure out how to call them.

Call your card and ask for the UK phone number. Tell them why you need it. Otherwise there is usually a number on the back of the card that can be dialed when out of the country.
