Just booked a trip in mid May to do something that I've never done in Ireland before. Play golf. Hard to believe that after 30 years of visiting Ireland on almost every year that I've never played golf there. Well that's going to happen in a big way now in May. We're using Westport, Co Mayo and Ballyvaugh as our two bases. We know in Co Mayo we're going to play Carne in Bellmullet, Enniscrone (actually Sligo but it's close to the border), Westport Golf Club, and possibly Connemara links when we leave Westport for Co. Clare.
Not as certain we're we will go in Co. Clare but there are many possibilities. Lahinch naturally being the most famous (and expensive). But there is Portumna (co. Galway), Kilkee, Doonbeg, and Spanish Point that look interesting. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
There will be 4 of us and we're renting a Ford Galaxy type vehicle so we got room for all of us and clubs.
A very nice service I discovered in researching this is www.clubs4hire.com. They are a Dublin based company that rents and delivers quality golf clubs at what I consider a very reasonable cost. 110 euros for the week including delivery and pick up to and from our hotels. So they will drop them off in Westport the day we arrive and pick them up in Ballyvaughn the day we leave. We do not even have to be present as they contact the hotels and arrange the drop off and pick up so they are there when we arrive and we can just leave them at the hotel when we leave. Very nice service and their reviews by customers are stellar.
We're staying at Clew Bay Hotel in Westport and Hylands Burren Hotel in Ballyvaughn. 2 of the guys have never been to Ireland before and 1 is a golf pro that has been once before. So I've been nominated as the official guide and (lucky me) designated driver. Oh well at least I chose towns with plenty of good pubs for after I'm done driving for the day.
Looking forward to it. I'll be sure to post a trip report when it's done.
Great to hear another trip to Ireland is in the works. I am not a golfer, although I have visited various golf courses. I would email all of those on your list to see how far in advance you should book. Some are more popular than others.
https://www.clubs4hire.com/ Sounds like good value and means you won't have to haul your own clubs on the plane.
Be sure to stop into the Soda Parlour in Ballyvaughan for the best crepes. And of course Monk's for pub grub. Burren Highland has very good food too and L'Arco Italianis yummy.
Thanks for the tips. Yeah I like Monk's pub. Not just for the grub but for the view of Galway Bay. Nice place to sit outside on a good day and have a pint.
L'Arco Italian I've not been too. That may be one of our dinner stops. Good to hear it's worth it.
Two of my other favorite places in Ballyvaughn are O'Lochlainn's Whiskey bar and Greene's pub. Both really nice place and O'Lochlainn's as you probably know was one of the pubs featured on the Irish Pub movie that came out a few years ago.
Luckily we've got a golf pro going with us and he's using his status to contact all the golf courses personally to see what he can arrange.
Tony if I make it to Portumna I'll let you know. It's a course I'd like to play but the pro going with us seems to be leaning towards all links courses. So we'll probably be doing the ones along the coast in Clare instead.
