Hi all, 2 questions about drive time. I know the websites that estimate them, but somehow it never seems quite accurate. you, who have done these drives, can help me out.
If we decide to do the Beara Peninsula from Killarney, roughly how long should we plan for? We would begin and end in Killarney.
We will be driving from Killarney to Dingle, and then seeing the Dingle Peninsula the next day. I know if we drive direct, it would take about 1 1/2 hours to get to Dingle. Would it be worth while to drive the Ring of Kerry that day? How long would it take? is there a shortcut that would be scenic and would fall between the 1 1/2 hour drive time, and yet not as long as the entire ring?
If you are going to do the Ring of Kerry then I recommend doing it justice. It can take 5-6 hours or more as a day trip from Killarney. There are things to see and do along the way such as Staigue Fort, Derrynane House, Gardens & National Park, Skellig Ring, Valentia Island and the Skellig Center. Stopping for sightseeing always takes time and you many not get to everything I mentioned. If you have an early start you could go from Killarney to Dingle via the ROK but it would be a long day indeed.
Beara would be another whole day. It depends on the route you choose, whether you do the whole Ring of Beara, if you take the cable car out to Dursey Island, whether you make frequent stops along the way, etc.
As for the estimated driving times you can find online, get the mileage and then divide by 35. That will give you an approximation of drive times. Sightseeing adds more time as do roadworks and those pesky sheep on the road.
