how to make deposit on B&B?

I emailed the owner of a B&B and she has a room for the dates I want, but she requested a deposit of 50 euros or 40 stg. (is that English pounds maybe?), in cash or a check, be sent to her.  How the heck do I send euros from here?  I don't have any euros until I get to Ireland! I don't think I can write a check in euros, can I?

The B&B is also listed through GoIreland, which accepts a credit card online, so I offered to reserve the room that way, but have not heard back from her yet.  Do the B&B owners lose some money if it goes through one of the online brokers?

Gosh, I'm not sure. All of mine except one asked for a credit card to hold the room/s. One didn't take anything from me, just an online handshake. I'm a bit worried about THAT one......

I understand your concern, Irish Eyes.  I was relieved when I received the email confirmation from my Dublin booking.  I had made reservations by phone, but I feel better when I have something in writing .....

I'm anxious for Michele and/or the more experienced travellers to join in because I'm not at all sure about this one.

it is very possible that they lose a bit of funds when you use the goireland website to book...i am sure they take a commission. but you are safer having something in writing - if the price is comparable - book thru the website.

we used that site at least 3 times so far this year and no owners begruged us booking that way.

but wait for michelle for an 'official' opinion.

Maggie,

I would contact the B&B again telling them that you cannot send euros. Ask if you can send a check in dollars. They should be able to put that in their bank account in Ireland for an extra charge. Or maybe they can do Pay Pal. What B&B is it? If you don't want to say on the forum email me from my contact page.

Yes, if you use an online booking company they do take a commission.

Michele,
I have a question... all our lodgings are confirmed MONTHS ago. What should I do now if anything....?
Do I need to send anymore emails as a reminder to the places? What do you normally do?

Irisheyes,

Since you made your reservations many months ago you should contact all lodgings again a couple of weeks before your trip to re-confirm. This is just a safety net that may catch a mistake early enough for you to book something else if a reservation has been misplaced. It will take little enough time and will give you peace of mind.

When you are in Ireland if you will arrive after 6 pm, stop and phone them to let them know you are on your way. Reservations expire at 6 on the dot. Don't chance it.

RE: how to make deposit on B&B?

Michele, thanks for the advice.  I emailed her about a check in US dollars or making the reservation through GoIreland.  Will see what she says.  I'm open to trying other places if this one doesn't work out.

I don't mind saying which B&B it is:  http://www.ballinderghouse.com  Many places either have no vacancies (it's for mid-July, after all --- not my first choice for travelling, but that's when the class is offered) or are more expensive than I wanted.  And not having a car once more puts me in the position of looking for places close to town. There are some interesting places out towards Lough Eske, but not without a car.  (Next trip outside of Dublin I think I have to bite the bullet and drive!)

I liked the location (views of the bay and the abbey almost in its backyard) and reviews for The Water's Edge, but it was full.  Ballinderg House is only a few houses away, so I tried it.  Am also considering Bayview Guest House (also close to the abbey) and Cullenbeg House.  Am also keeping your recommendation of Donegal Manor in mind.  Any take on Drumaine House on Upper Main Street (nice and close to the Diamond)?

I welcome thoughts and suggestions from all!

Maggie,

I'm afriad that all my suggestions are too far out for you with the exception of Donegal Manor. But that is a guesthouse and may be more than you want to pay. I have heard good feedback on Ard na Breatha. Unfortunately there was no one at home when I stopped by to see it so I haven't inspected it yet.

Keep up the search. I know you will find something to suit you.

Michele

Thanks anyway, Michele. I have some phone calls to make tomorrow (didn't want to bother the owners on Sunday).  If I can't find a place in town then I'll have to use a cab, that's all.  I'm only going to be there from Thursday evening until Saturday afternoon, so basically only Friday to look around the town itself.

If worse comes to worse I could camp out in the abbey ruins .......

Good news (I think)!

Received email from Susanna this morning saying forget about the deposit and would I just call her the day before arrival to re-confirm and let her know what time I'll be there.

So, I'll be our guinea pig and let you know how it goes.

Maggie,

That's great. I would reconfirm just before you depart for Ireland, telling her you will phone when you get to Ireland. If you run into problems she should be able to get you something else. B&B owners will usually call their friends for rooms.
