route/time: donegal-kenmare?

Hi Michelle,

My wife and I will be in Ireland for two weeks starting next Tuesday.  We'll be spending all our time near the west coast, spending 2 to 3 nights each in Ballyvaughan, Letterfrack, Donegal, Kenmare and Dingle.  Unfortunately, due to some changes we have one long drive in there--from Donegal to Kenmare.  I've checked both AA Roadwatch and viamichelin and each pegs the drive at roughly 5 1/2 to 6 hours. (I know these are probably optimistic.) AA Roadwatch suggests a route through Limerick while viamichelin suggests branching off at Ennis to the Killimer-Tarbert ferry.  I'd just as soon miss Limerick traffic, but I thought I'd ask your advice. Also, if there is time, are there any sites we should stop to see along the way? (We will have already been in the general areas--west Clare and Connemara-- so I'm most interested in sites directly along the route.)

Thanks a lot.

JJ,

Wow! That is one long drive. I don't envy you the time in the car. I think the driving alone will take around 8 to 9 hours, depending on different factors. That is hardly time for making any sightseeing stops. You should probably just stop for lunch along the way and call it a day at that.

I think going through Limerick is quicker and I would go that way. I recommend the ferry when people are going to be in west Clare and want to go to Kerry (or vice versa). But you will want the most direct route and won't want to have the slow roads on the coast to contend with. Also, there may be a wait for the ferry.

I suggest you do not take the N71 between Killarney and Kenmare. It is a small winding road through the mountains and you will be exhausted at that point. Instead take the N22 toward Cork, which is a highway and much faster. In Poulgorm Bridge take the R569 to Kenmare. Much quicker.

Have a safe trip and let us know how it goes when you return.

Michele
