I am an American college student who will be visiting Ireland for six weeks this summer as part of an international study program offered through my university.
I am in the midst of deciding what kind of clothing to pack, and while I had planned on wearing casual clothing such as jeans and t-shirts during the daytime hours, I was wondering what would be appropriate attire for going out at night?
I have heard that some pubs enforce a strict dress code, and since I am an avid music lover who plans to fully experience the Irish music scene, I want to ensure that I bring the proper attire.
If I wore a nice shirt, such as a button down blouse, would it be acceptable to wear jeans and dress shoes/boots, or would I need dress pants, too?
in my experience here in galway (i have been here for just over 6 months now), no one has ever been turned away. i notice the college girls might dress up a bit more to go dancing or doing the 'club scene' but it is not a requirement.
the organized trad sessions we have caught have all been informal as well.
i would not worry about it - denim is very fashionable here. levi's start at 80 euro a pair(!)...
I've visited at least 100 different pubs throughout the Republic of Ireland over the years and in that time I never once encountered a strict dress code. I've always dressed in denim and tshirt or sweatshirt.
As Mark and Kathy have said most of Ireland is very casual. However, some pubs and clubs in Dublin do have a dress code. Denim is allowed most everywhere but sneakers are not. But since you will be in Ireland for 6 weeks, I would bring just one pair of pants that can be dressed up or down. You never know...you might be invited to tea with the president!
