day trips from dublin

I am going to Ireland for the first time, taking a 7-day Vagabond tour and am very excited!  My friend and I are staying for a few extra days (before and after the tour) and are looking for something to do...off the beaten path...preferably.  We plan to check out Wicklow mountains one day, but are at a loss for the other day.  We'll be staying in Dublin. Any suggestions of "hidden treasures" that might not be covered by a  tour would be appreciated.

Also, I am not much of a Guiness drinker, or beer for that matter.  Any tips on what to order at the pubs? In the states, I typically get wine or mixed drinks, but I'm hearing that mixed drinks are much different.

Thanks so much for your help!

I'm not a beer drinker at all, either. I found that every bar served cider -- if not Bulmers, then some other kind.

A favorite pub of mine that's definitely off the beaten path would be the Brazen Head, Dublin's oldest pub. It's in Smithfield, near the Jameson Distillery (http://www.brazenhead.com/). From the way they market themselves it seems touristy, but I've rarely ever seen tourists there in all the times I've gone.

Also, if you enjoy walking through parks and such, the tour will take you to Stephen's Green, I'm sure - so check out the Iveagh Gardens, which I loved. Not too many people know about it and it's only a few minutes walk from the green.

Kelley,

I've posted some lesser-visited sites in Dublin at www.irishfireside.com (also have a corresponding podcast Episode #6 which will likely require a high speed connection, but the episode guide is available with dial-up...accessible from the site or from iTunes).

It can be great to take the DART (train) to Malahide and Dalkey (and other towns on the DART line); it's easy, efficient and cheap.

Many pubs have wine and different pre-packaged-type mixed drinks...as well as serving up drinks-to-order. You might find that when they're not sure how to make what you ask for...the bartenders might mix up something (usually with 7Up) and hope you like it. If you have particular favorites, be sure you know what is in the mix and then ask the bartender if they have what it takes to make it. Then again, maybe you'll find a new favorite...cider is definitely worth a try.

Kelley,

Corey and Carrie have given you some very good info. Do go to www.irishfireside.com and listen to the podcasts. They are excellent and very well done. Whenever I have time I head off to listen to them.

You might be interested in visiting Newgrange at Bru na Boinne, Tara and other ancient sites. They are just north of Dublin and you can get a day trip from Dublin.

BTW, I hear very good feedback about the Vagabond 4x4 tours and they definitely go off the beaten path.
